Things to see and do in our area and surrounds are plentiful and one of the many reasons Taranaki has been coined "Taradise." With the sea at its feet and the mountain at its back, New Plymouth District is blessed with a magnificent landscape that provide ample recreation opportunities.

Coastal Walkway

The award-winning Coastal Walkway is a 10km path that forms an expansive sea-edge promenade stretching all the way to Bell Block.

Ideal for walking, running, cycling or skating, or simply enjoying the view of the dramatic west coast, the walkway runs from the Hickford Park, Bell Block to the east to Port Taranaki to the west, with numerous pedestrian access points dotted along the way.

Surf

If your coming here to go surfing... you already know what's going on. We have waves, lots of waves and a few of those waves can be world class on their day.
There is plenty of information about surfing the Taranaki coast out there on the net so I won't add to the congestion by advertising it here, we all relish the ability to find a secluded break and surf it with just your mates.

Puke Ariki

Puke Ariki is a world-class knowledge centre where library, museum and visitor information are combined to tell the stories of Taranaki - past, present and future.

Premier contemporary art

The Govett-Brewster is New Zealand's premier contemporary art museum and home to the collection of modernist filmmaker and kinetic sculptor Len Lye. The gallery is committed to developing a contemporary art museum that is recognized internationally for its global vision and special commitment to the Pacific region.


Mount Taranaki

Mount Taranaki (or Mount Egmont as it is also known) provides unique recreational and educational opportunities for the region's residents and visitors. The mountain provides excellent climbing (with care and planning), skiing, tramping and photography.

On a side note, after living in Japan for many years, I can't help but look at our mountain now and think how much it reminds me of Mount Fuji.

Golf

Of the 20 Golf courses in Taranaki, 8 of them are located with-in New Plymouth District, many with outstanding panoramic views of the coast and/or mountain.

The Ngamotu Links course is a prime example, having been named one of New Zealands' top 10 courses, it is just on the edge of New Plymouth city and offers a classic par -72 layout and a superb golfing challenge. To top it all off, the maximum green fee charged is just $60 (NZD).

Wildlife and the Brooklands Zoo

In the surrounding countryside of New Plymouth city there are many wild and tame animals to be seen, a couple of my local favorites I've pictured to the right, the glorious Black Swans and the ever hilarious Alpaca.

Brooklands Zoo is a free, family focused zoo which is home to farmyard animals, oriental small-clawed otters, ring-tailed lemurs and both capuchin and cotton-top tamarin monkeys, as well as a selection of colourful birds housed inside a walk-through free-flight aviary.
