New Plymouth is the largest city of the province of Taranaki � or �The Naki� to locals. Ducks and Drakes is perfectly positioned minutes away from the centre of the city and a great base to explore further afield.

Taranaki has much for the visitor explore, New Plymouth alone boasts the Govett Brewster Gallery, the award winning Coastal Walkway stretching 10 kilometres along the seafront from the Port to the engineering marvel of Te Rewa Rewa bridge; The Te Henui and Huatoki walkways meander along the side of a stream through the city, at a gentle pace. Pukekura Park � 52 hectares of lakes, exotic trees, gardens and native trees, where you can row on the lake or take high tea in the historic tea rooms or simply feeds the ducks, it was a major location in the Tom Cruise Movie �The Last Samurai�; Paritutu Rock and sugar loaf island � climb to the top of Paritutu for spectacular views of the city and coastline. Puke Ariki Museum houses an extensive collection of Maori artifacts and exhibits of early colonial days. Nearby you can�t miss the 45metre Len Lye Wind Wand.

New Plymouth is home to world class surfing beaches � and is the gateway to Surf Highway 45. Mt Taranaki dominates the landscape both physically and emotionally � it is truly majestic and draws bushwalkers and adventurers under its spell with its many tracks and trails � both moderate and challenging. The Forgotten World Highway is an adventure in itself and is accessed via Stratford � Plan to see Stratford�s famous glockenspiel play a scene from Shakespeare�s Romeo and Juliet (Daily at 10am,1pm,3pm and 7pm). North of the city is Pukearuhe, an unusually beautiful and remote area, with soaring white cliffs and sea sculptured stones. The White Cliffs Walk is spectacular and well worth considering. The Wineries of Okurukuru and Waiau Estates and The White Cliffs Brewery (Mikes Organic Beer) are well worth a visit.
