Abel Tasman National Parks uncrowded northern end is 30 minutes by car, bus or our own private shuttle service. Take the day walk from Totaranui, around Separation Point (past the seal colony & historic Whariwharangi Hut) to Wainui Bay. This is where the Dutch explorer Abel Tasman is said to have discovered New Zealand. Alternatively, take the shorter beach walk (past the naked hippies!) to Taupo Point's ancient Maori Pa site (fortification).
No energy for walking? Take a water taxi from Totaranui to Awaroa Lodge for an exotic lunch, surrounded by nature.

The one hour walk to Wainui water fall, challenges you with a swing bridge - not for the nervous!
Take stunning photos of Ligar Bay from Abel Tasman memorial.
Stop for coffee at Pohara's quaint seaside village or try Blowkart racing along the beach.
Cliftons Grove Scenic reserve, (a 30 minute walk) allows you to take in the scenery from the cliff face viewing platform, accessed through a split in the enormous limestone rocks. Here, you can also view the Nikau palm (NZ's only native palm tree) & see the Rata's (NZ Christmas tree) red flowers around Xmas. Bush bash your way up to Rawhiti cave for a stunning display of stalactites & stalagmites. Try some rock climbing at Paynes Ford or try the rope swing over one of Takaka Rivers popular swimming holes.
From the top of Takaka Hill, visit the Southern Hemispheres largest natural sink hole (tomo), before mountain biking the Rameka track back to Takaka.
Hike some trails at the head of the Cobb Reservoir in Kahurangi National Park.
Take in Te WaikoroPUPU Springs - said to be the worlds clearest water.
Spend an evening with the locals at the iconic Mussel Inn, drinking boutique beers & local cider. Dine there on local scallops & dance to kiwi & overseas bands.
Try Rosie Glow chocolates or a scallop pie at historic Collingwood. 30minutes on at the tip of the South Island, take the 30 min walk up to Pillar Point light house, for the best views out over Farewell Spit.
Dont miss the seals at Cape Farewell, or the sea caves at the spectacular Wharariki Beach (not to be missed).
