Kinloch Lodge an authors pick in the 2008 Lonely Planet is perfectly situated on the lakefront between the Routeburn and Greenstone tracks. Built in 1868 the lodge is probably the oldest operating guesthouse in New Zealand.
The Heritage lodge has 6 bedrooms. The 2 Queen rooms on the front overlook the lake and have Queen size beds. There are 4 double rooms on the side of the lodge. Rooms do not have en-suite facilities, though the bathrooms have huge cast iron claw foot baths and separate showers. All bedrooms have cotton linen, goose down duvets and bathrobes. The Heritage lounge has an open wood fire and the front of the lodge has a terrace that overlooks the lake. The Kinloch lodge restaurant offers fabulous food for breakfast, lunch and dinner as well as cafe items and a bar with a great wine list. Lodge facilities include a boot drier and drying area as fishing and walking are key activities. Fishing rods and mountain bikes are available for hire and kayak trips are run daily subject to weather.
