Things to Do in Asoke

The first thing you’re going to want to do on your Asoke holiday is hop on the skytrain and take it over to Khao San Road. Why take a train to a road? Because adjacent to this famous stretch of pavement is Wat Phra Kaew, or the Temple of the Emerald Buddha. If you’re wondering why it has that English name, it’s because there’s a massive statue of Buddha that was carved from a single jade stone. How a Thai person was able to carve such a sculpture in the 14th century isn’t for us or you to figure out, but the statue is worth a look.

Wat Phra Kaew is located on the same grounds as the Grand Palace, so if you want to see where past Thai kings lived all you have to do is walk across the lawn. Even though it’s still a working palace, part of it is open to the public as a museum. Beat that, Queen Elizabeth.

Shopping, Dining & Nightlife

Get back on the skytrain and take it back to the station in Watthana, because there’s shopping that needs to be done. Rent a car in Asoke and drive up and down Sukhumvit Road for DVDs, T-shirts, real and fake jewellery and pretty much anything else. Along this same road is Terminal 21, which is one of Thailand’s biggest shopping centres. There’s six floors and each has a theme based on locations around the world. For instance, the 6th floor is modelled on Hollywood, and the 3rd floor is Istanbul. Can you believe it? A whole globe in a mall.

Of course you’ll be hungry after a day of gallivanting around town, and there’s no better place to be hungry than on Asoke holidays. Why? Because you’re in Bangkok, silly. Try a warm bowl of boat noodles and see how many chili flavours you can handle. Next, head to the insect stand and get a bag full of fried crickets. Relax, they taste like potato chips.
