Palmerston North is a hub for culture, recreational gardens and all things pleasant. Stay in one of our Palmerston North hotels and enjoy all that's on offer in New Zealand's seventh largest city, affectionately known as "Palmy".
Cultural Things to See and Do
The Square, in the centre of the city, is where the locals like to hang out, and you'll enjoy the seven hectares of wide open space as well. Besides the parklands, gardens, lakes and fountains, there are some significant landmarks in the square too, namely the famous Palmerston Clock Tower and Te Peeti Te Awe Awe War Memorial. If you love your culture and history, hit up Te Manawa Museum to see the unique local art, science and history displays. The museum also hosts an array of events and exhibitions throughout the year, so make sure you check the calendar to find out what's going on while you're here. On the other hand, if you're a thespian at heart, you'll notice that theatre lovers from all over the country can often be seen milling around the local theatres. So if you love a live play, go ahead and join your flock at one of Palmy's theatres. You won't be disappointed.
Outdoorsy Things to Do
If you love nature and the great outdoors, Himatangi Beach is a good spot for a romantic picnic and stroll. The gorgeous Victoria Esplanade Gardens are another must-visit. They're also a great place to take the kids for an afternoon frolic. Within the gardens is the Dugald McKenzie Rose Breeding Centre, which has been voted one of the five best rose gardens in the world! So make sure you slow down to smell the roses on your trip. After a visit to the gardens, you can view just about all of Palmerston North by following the walking tracks and perching yourself at the top of the Manawatu Gorge. Make sure you take your camera to this picture perfect spot, where the river runs between the mountain range.
Blokey Things to Do
Sporty types should head to the New Zealand Rugby Museum, where you can see New Zealand's largest collection of rugby union memorabilia. After touring the rugby museum, head to the Tui Brewery which has been running since 1889. You'll love exploring this beer museum and, of course, partaking in the golden beverage. If beer isn't really your thing, you could take the 150km trip to the Martinborough wine region. There's no need to worry about heading back to your Palmy hotel after sipping all that fine wine though. Just stay in one of these Martinborough hotels.
