Accommodation In Russell

Our Russell accommodation is the perfect place to stay while soaking up the small town charm of this historic seaside village. Russell is a small, coastal town in the picturesque Bay of Islands and since European settlement in the 1700s has provided a haven for visitors, offering shelter and hospitality.

Russell was formerly known as Kororareka a name which was left off the town sign due its colourful history as a centre for debauchery and unruly sailors during its time as a port for whaling and convict ships. Today a stay in our Russell accommodation can show just how long forgotten this boisterous past is, providing instead a relaxed atmosphere, colonial buildings, bed and breakfasts and cafes.

Our Russell hotels make a great base for appreciating the art, culture and historical significance of the area. Buildings line the waterfront still and are a constant reminder of Russell’s important past, from the Duke of Marlborough hotel to the Victorian Gothic Customhouse to French Lyonnaise styled Pompallier House, the first Roman Catholic Mission in New Zealand or the Anglican Christ Church, the oldest existing church in New Zealand.

High above our Russell accommodation is Maiki Hill, where a flagstaff stands that provided a historical conflict between Maori and European inhabitants of the area in the mid 19th Century. The Battle of Kororareka was fought over this flagstaff as it was a symbol of British authority. As a reminder of the battle today it flies New Zealand's original flag twelve days a year.

Although our hotels in Russell are easily accessible by the coastal road, the town still retains its remote island quality; it is a community that welcomes visitors and new residents but manages to hold onto its particular seaside village charm. Despite this remote nature, Russell is a vibrant, cosmopolitan community that entertains and attracts visitors from New Zealand and around the world.
