Is your basic resort but with great extras like daily boat trips to snorkel(even on a Sunday), kayaks, and paddle board all included.. A wonderful place to just chill out or hang for a day or two. Sunset is sorta it. Pool is basic but good and great beaches.

Great location

Rooms on the beach with great views. Staff were really friendly and helpful and the added advantage of being able to take the ferry back to the mainland if you wanted to do a day visit. Most relaxing and restful holiday.

Dream Honeymoon destination, will go back!

Pros: Nature, the fish at the coral reefs, the people and the food.
Cons: A playground for kids (swing and slide). The generator could be replaced by solar power, as we often smelled the fuel in our fale, which is unhealthy.
Location: Snorkel, kayak, diving, village tour
We spent 9 days on the Atata island, went there off season, and we had the whole island just for ourselves. They upgraded our fale for free to a beachfront one, we loved it so much! The food was delicious for a good price ($8-9 for a lunch, we could have dinner from the lunch menu as well). Our daily schedule was the following: breakfast, snorkeling in the morning, lunch, kayaking in the afternoon, dinner, sleep... for 9 days, and the island is so beautiful, the reef is so close we didn't get bored! People were very friendly, we visited the village twice, and learned a lot about Tongan culture. We will definitely go back.

Well worth the stay

Pros: Friendly staff. Beach front everything. Great restaurant, bar and deck area. Loved the snorkeling both from kayak and from their boat.
Cons: The bungalow shower was very disappointing - very low pressure, took a while to heat and was a little saline. But, there is a pool by the bar.
Location: Atata Island is 40 minutes by boat from Nuku'olofa. They run fishing, diving and snorkeling trips. There are facilities for families. Safe swiming.
We loved our time at the Royal Sunset. It gets a lower rating because the bungalows aren't built like 5-star hotel rooms, the water pressure is you can't drink the brakish water from the taps. However, the whole resort runs off a generator (which you can hear day and night unfortunately) and their water comes from a desalination plant and all supplies need to be brought in by boat. So, given the relatively difficult conditions they're working under, the hotel was very well presented and quite comfortable. If you go there expecting something pristine, you won't find it. But if you go there expecting them to have done a lot with not much, provide excellent service, food and assistance, then you'll be in for a treat. When we arrived they gave us a glass of orange juice before we'd even put our bags down. The restaurant menu changes daily and included the fresh Tuna we caught on a trip out with one of the hotel guides. They run snorkeling boat trips each day and can do dive trips on request, provided their instructor is available. There is also kayaks, beach loungers, etc. Every bungalow is on the beach front and most of them have a great view of the sunset each day. The resort is surrounded by nice beach, which is more than you get on the main island nearby. The ferry to the mainland runs twice a day, but you need to tell them you're coming or going otherwise you might not get a seat if they're full. There's a small village at the other end of the island.

Relaxing and Beautiful

Everything about Atata was beautiful. From the exciting boat ride to the beautiful well catered bungalow and the delicious food. Staff service was excellent and went out of their way to ensure we were comfortable and had enough to eat. Overall great stay and cant wait to be back!

Welcoming and Peaceful

Pros: Private Fale, spacious and clean, lovely outdoor seating on the deck and a great hammock.
Location: Approximately 30 mins by boat from mainland, plenty to do on the Island - snorkelling, kayaking, swimming, walking, stand up paddle boards.
The welcome we received as we arrived on the Island was lovely and friendly., our fale was very comfortable and spacious, the staff were very helpful, we stayed 2 nights and managed to have plenty of time for swimming, snorkelling, kayaking and walks thru the local village, we were lucky enough to be there for a church service at the local Tongan church, a must see and do!
