6 kid-friendly gadgets for capturing holiday moments this summer

It’s never been easier to take awesome holiday snaps and videos than it is today. This summer, why not hand over control of the tech to your youngsters and discover what holidays look like through their eyes. They might just surprise you.

Here are our top kid-friendly tech picks:

1. Smartphone
Top pick: Samsung Galaxy 7 & 7 Edge
What could be easier than borrowing your trusty smartphone – like they probably already do – and taking snaps and videos on the go? Their intuitive use and increasingly-available waterproofing options means smartphones are the most low-fuss way for capturing holiday moments.

Being able to edit on the fly using apps such Quik (iOS & Android) for video or Snapseed for photos (iOS & Android) is pretty appealing, especially for the social media lovers amongst us. You know sharing a video your kids took is going to bring in the likes 😉

If you’re worried about the kids dropping your phone or it ending up in the pool, you might want to consider one of the other options below. Or at least checking your insurance policy is up to date!

2. Action cam
Top picks: GoPro, Sony Action Cam or the TomTom Bandit
If you’re a bit more attached to your phone (no judgement), another great option is an action cam. They’re usually quite rugged and waterproof which means the only thing the kids have to worry about is losing it.

3. Video with great audio
Top pick: Zoom Q2N
Have a serious filmmaker on your hands? Great sound is really important for quality filmmaking, and while smartphones and action cams are great for capturing video, Zoom’s Q2N will help create HD videos with high-impact audio. Steven Spielberg, eat your heart out.

4. Tripod
Top pick: Joby GPod Mini Magnetic
It might be old-school but tripods are a simple solution to the age-old problem of taking a full-family shot, on location, without the camera falling off a cliff or into the sea. The Joby GPod Mini Magnetic is a simple, easy to use piece with moveable legs allowing it to be set in unusual places.

5. Drone
Top picks: DJI Mavic Pro 4K and DJI Phantom
Drones are increasingly becoming cheaper and easier to use with the bonus of being really fun. If you’d like to capture a new angle on the usual family holidays, and combine two hobbies at once, then drones are a great way to go.

The DJI Mavic Pro 4K is just out, and while the price tag is a little high, you get your money’s worth with gimbal-stabilisation, 4K video and almost 30 minutes worth of fly time. In a lower price bracket is the DJI Phantom, which includes a handy ‘return to base’ feature – should you lose contact with your drone it returns to where it took off. It also features 2.7K video and 12MP stills in an easy-to-fly system.

Hot tip: Did you know the Civil Aviation Authority oversees all things flying in the air above us, including drones! So it’s worth getting familiar with CASA’s rules including not flying drones at night or within 30 metres of other people.

6. Selfie stick
They might have copped a bad wrap but selfie sticks undeniably give short young arms a boost when trying to get better selfies or reach interesting new angles. Ranging in price anywhere from $5 to $50, they can also come with remote shutter activation to make family snaps simple.
