When you think of the NSW Central Coast, the first thing that springs to mind is the beach. Just 90 minutes from Sydney, ‘the Coast’ is spoilt with stretches of perfect coastline, with not a parking meter in sight. From Terrigal to Avoca, The Entrance to Copacabana, there are more than forty beaches to choose from – and each one a little piece of paradise.
But there’s plenty more to this region than it’s unspoiled coastline. In fact, it’s a fantastic destination for any time of year – even after your summer beach days have finished. From eating out to outdoor adventures, here are five ways to enjoy the Central Coast that don’t involve filling your shoes (and car) with sand.
1. The local food scene
No matter what part of the coast you visit, you’re bound to find a good bite to eat. If you’re feeling fancy, the award-winning Bells At Killcare is a must-do. It combines a classic Italian menu with Hamptons-style vibes – heaven! Other great local options include Bombini (just near Avoca) and The Lucky Bee at Frankie’s Rooftop in Woy Woy (one of the latest additions to the Central Coast foodie scene).
When the morning comes, if you’re craving a strong coffee and a long, lazy brunch, follow the locals and grab a table at Bellyfish in Terrigal.
2. Incredible national parks
After all that eating, it’s time to burn off a few calories. So it’s lucky the Central Coast is home to lots of amazing walks and national parks. Favourites include Bouddi National Park (which has views all the way to Sydney on a clear day), Brisbane Waters National Park, and Wyrrabalong National Park, just a bit north of The Entrance. All have great trails and picnic areas.
3. Tempting local tipples
The Central Coast is starting to make a name for itself when it comes to craft spirits and beer. A visit to Distillery Botanica’s cellar door, located in Erina on two acres of gardens, is a must-do for gin-lovers. Nearby, Six Strings Brewing Company is a great spot for boutique beer, live music and a tasty gastropub-style dinner.
4. Great markets
Hit up one of the Central Coast’s many fantastic markets for delicious fresh produce, handmade gifts and fashion by local designers. Some top picks include the Avoca Beachside Markets (held every fourth Sunday), the Shelly Beach Markets (the last Saturday of every month) and the Gosford City Farmers Markets (every Sunday at the Gosford Showground).
5. Fantastic sports events
If you’re an NRL or A-League fan, you’re in luck! The Central Coast Stadium, perfectly situated on the Gosford waterfront, hosts games throughout the year, so you can cheer on your team while also enjoying a relaxing weekend getaway. Check out this year’s games here.
