25 tips for saving for your next holiday

It won’t come as a huge surprise to know that the Wotif team are a bunch of serious travel lovers. It’s rare to chat to a colleague who doesn’t have their next holiday booked and carefully managing annual leave days without going into the red has become a fine art in our office. This travel passion that must be fed also means we’re pretty handy with saving to fund our wanderlust.

Here are 25 of our top money saving tips:

1. Go on a new clothes hiatus and only buy vintage.

2. Grow your own veggies. It’s fun and cheap.

3. If you’re not really using it, cancel that gym membership and get outside instead!

4. Make cheap Tuesday – think movies, pizza, happy hours – your best friend.

5. Catch up with friends over breakfast instead of dinner. It’s usually way cheaper.


6. Do a big cook-up on Sundays so you’re not tempted to order take-away during the week.

7. Swap Christmas presents for an amazing family holidays (only really young or older kids will probably let you get away with this one though!)

8. Are you artistic? Turn your hobby into an income stream by selling via etsy or your local markets.

9. Swap nights at the cinema for movie nights at home, with snacks of course.

10. Skip the carwash and do it yourself or enlist the kids for a fraction of the cost 😉

11. Pay your bills on time. Those late fees could add up to be a meal out over a year.

12. Kill two birds with one stone – declutter your place and sell any unwanted goods on Gumtree or eBay

13. Start a piggybank or coin jar. You’ll be amazed how quickly they pile up.


14. Learn to say no to catch-ups you don’t even want to go to. There’s nothing worse than having to fork out cash for something you don’t enjoy.

15. Invite friends over and get everyone to bring a dish.

16. Partake in Meat Free Monday – vegetarian dishes are typically much cheaper than their meaty counterparts.

17. Keep on the lookout for free events.

18. Take snacks with you when you leave the house.

19. Consider cutting back your daily coffee. And maybe even investing in a coffee machine.

20. Put all of the mini shampoos and conditioners you taken as hotel souvenirs over the years to good use.

21. Don’t grocery shop on an empty stomach! Your waistline will probably thank you for this one too.


22. Get outside and enjoy the great outdoors. Park and beach days can be super cheap.

23. Quit smoking, Enough said.

24. Swap books with your friends or join a library.

25. Walk, use public transport or carpool.
