OK, I know what you might be thinking. “Going away for Christmas is too much work. It’s more relaxing to stay home and save the cash.” Well, anonymous internet reader, I’m afraid I’m going to have to disagree. While it’s true you’ll need to book early to get a good deal, a Christmas holiday is well worth the effort. Here’s 7 reasons why they’re brilliant.
1. No Xmas Day run-around
While having lots of special people to share Chrissy with is cause for serious warm fuzzies, it can also lead to the dreaded Three Christmases In One Day™. Christmas Brekkie with your immediate family, Christmas Lunch with your partner’s people, Christmas dinner with your own… It’s a frenzy of eating, driving, eating, driving, eating, driving when all you want is to have a beer and watch Gremlins (the ultimate Christmas movie). But there’s no rushing around when you go away. Book a stay with Pay Movies and/or Premium Channels, stock up your fridge, and you’re set!
Note: Wotif can’t guarantee that Gremlins will be on TV. Sorry.
2. Time with the people you love most
Less time spent running around (or making awkward conversation with weird Aunt Millicent) means more time relaxing with the people that matter most. Getting away for Christmas means you can kick back with a glass of wine or extra helping of dessert (it’s still called seconds when you’re on your third bowl, right?) while the kids get swim in the resort pool, splash around the water park, or play with their new toys.
3. Christmas Day sleep-ins!
No Xmas Day running around also means no need to get up early. I mean, unless you’re a kid, in which case you should definitely be up by 4am…
4. Xmas Day at the beach
For us lucky Southern Hemispherers, Christmas is right in the middle of summer. So why do so many of us spend it indoors, eating wintery roasts? Trust me, one Xmas Day seafood barbecue at Noosa or Palm Beach and you’ll never look back.
5. No presents
Look, I love presents and shiny, shiny wrapping paper as much as the next person. But Christmas shopping can be a nightmare, and sometimes you just don’t need or want any more things. Skip the gifts and use the cash for an Xmas getaway instead.
6. Treat yoself
Hey, it’s not all about presents and family and good will towards men. Even if you’re a Super Scrooge, you’ve gotta make the most of that extra loooong four-day weekend. Why not pamper yourself with a luxurious (and adults-only) 5-star break? No lame bonbon jokes or Mariah Carey albums allowed!
7. White Christmas
Mulled wine by an open fire, ice skating in Central Park, strolling through German markets, maybe even visiting Santa’s village in Rovaniemi, Finland… *Sigh*. There’s a reason we’ve all got “White Christmas” on our bucket lists. You’ve gotta tick it off.
