7 events to travel for in May

Public-holiday-filled April is all over red rover, but that doesn’t mean May should be all work and no play. In fact, here’s seven solid reasons for a May getaway.

Agfest, Launceston, Tasmania
When: May 4 – 6
An event organised by the volunteers of Rural Youth Tasmania, Agfest invites both industry and the public to join them for festivities. If you’re interested in the history of agriculture, check out the heritage display, or head to the Craft Pavilions house for a wide range of Tassie’s best handmade goods. The Beta Milk Unique Tastes pavilion is also a must-see, with oodles of local produce on offer. Hope you’re not allergic to dairy ;-).

High Country Harvest Festival, North-East Victoria
When: May 5 – 21
Meet passionate growers, learn from head chefs, and, of course, eat all the things! High Country Harvest Festival celebrates all things food, wine, and craft beer. There are heaps of day events on offer too; I’m particularly keen to check out Pick, Pickle, Wine and Dine, a hands-on tour and session on how to pick and process your own table olives. Unlimited olives in my fridge – yes please!

Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia, Sydney
When: May 14 – 19
This five-day event showcases the best in Australian fashion, with collections from both emerging talent and Australia’s most established designers. Keep your eyes peeled for associated events around the city – any excuse for a ladies’ night!

GMHBA Great Ocean Road Marathon, Victoria
When: May 20 -21
There’s no better place to run than on one of Australia’s most scenic routes – the Great Ocean Road. This marathon offers a range of distances to suit all fitness levels, from 1.5km to 45km (serious respect for the latter!). This is a good event to run off your bucket list.

People’s Choice BASSINTHEGRASS Music Festival, Darwin
When: May 20
An all-ages event, the line-up for this festival is seriously impressive. We’re talking John Butler Trio, The Veronicas, and Amy Shark, just to name a few. Set in the picturesque Darwin Amphitheatre, BASSINTHEGRASS is great value for money, with second-round tickets available now and only $100. Be quick though, ’cause they’re selling out fast.

Vivid Sydney
When: May 26 – June 17
A festival of light, music, and ideas! You’ll be wowed when you see iconic landmarks such as the Sydney Opera House, Museum of Contemporary Art, Taronga Zoo, and Customs House lit up with incredible colour and art. With an amazing program of music, interactive outdoor art, and awesome events around the city, Vivid will show you Sydney in a whole new light.

State of Origin, Brisbane and Sydney
When: First game May 31
One of Australia’s greatest sporting events, State of Origin 2017 is almost here, with the first game kicking off at Suncorp Stadium in Brisvegas. Tickets start at $80, but sell out fast, so jump on ’em ASAP. You’ll be cheering (or screaming) with a beer in your hand in no time.
