9 Byron Bay must-dos

You don’t need a plan to have an awesome time in Byron Bay. The amazing beaches, chilled-out locals, and friendly hippie vibes will take care of that. But if you’d like some tips to make your holiday even more brilliant, here are nine must (if you want to) dos.

1. Watch the sun rise from Byron Bay Lighthouse

The Byron Bay Lighthouse is Australia’s most easterly point, so it’s the first part of Oz to greet every new day. The view’s awesome, and well worth the 45-minute walk… if you can drag yourself away from your comfy hotel bed. The struggle is real, folks.

2. Learn to surf

When in Rome, eat gelato ’til the guy who’s selling it cuts you off (“I’ll tell you when I’ve had enough!”). But when in Byron Bay, catch some waves and hang ten! Book a lesson to learn the basics (and all-important safety tips), then get out there and make a splash!

3. Visit the Crystal Castle

OK, so this one’s technically in Mullumbimby, but I promise it’s worth the 20-minute drive. The Crystal Castle grounds are home to stunning gardens, Buddhist monuments, giant amethyst columns, and… you know what? You’ve got to see it for yourself.

4. Go kayaking with dolphins

You know what’s fun? Kayaking. You know what’s even more fun? Kayaking with dolphins. That would be enough to make it an unforgettable day, but you’ll also see Byron Bay’s best sights, learn some local history, and scoff Tim Tams on the beach. Woohoo!

5. Say cheers to Jonson and Bay Streets

While the kids are away (in bed), Mum and Dad will play. Hire a sitter for the night (or travel with friends and take turns having a night off), then head to Jonson and Bay Streets for pubs, clubs, and live music.

6. Jump out of a plane

With a parachute. Obviously.

OK, so tandem skydiving’s not for everyone. Some of us would rather keep our feet on the ground, where there’s wine, and cheese, and puppies, and not falling. But if you’re feeling brave, Byron Bay’s gorgeous hinterland and perfect beaches make for awesome views as you float down to Earth.

7. Check out the markets

Whether you’re after fresh produce, local arts and crafts, a quirky gift, or tie-dyed everything, Byron Bay’s markets have got you covered. Check out the Artisan Market (Saturday nights, October to March), the Byron Bay Markets (first Sunday of every month), and the Byron Bay Farmer’s Market (Thursday mornings).

8. Sky-high whale watching

Yep, you read that right. Take to the sky in a microlight aircraft to witness a humpback whale migration in all its glory. It’s the best way to see the whales without disturbing them, and you might even see a calf or two.

9. Chillax on the beach
It’s why you came, right? So make sure you leave time in your holiday schedule to get some salt water in your hair, and some sand in your togs 😉
