Mid-Century Mountain Ski in/Ski Out Luxury Chalet - Best Location
5 Bedrooms, 4 Baths (Sleeps 14)
Newly updated mid-century mountain ski chalet that delivers an amazing balance of CONVENIENCE, COMFORT, and STYLE. You won’t find a better value for a nearly 3000 sq. ft. property in all of San Juan County.
WELCOME TO OUR HOME! Many of the properties on the resort are rarely occupied by their owners—not Elkpoint 8. We live nearby and spend as much time as we can at the place we love. What does that mean for you? It means we want to stay in a place that is CLEAN, STYLISH, and WELL-MAINTAINED…just like you. It means we value PRIVACY, SAFETY, CONVENIENCE, and the ability to have our ENTIRE FAMILY UNDER ONE ROOF for special occasions…just like you. It means when you stay at Elkpoint 8, you are part of our family.
WHY ELKPOINT 8? We have been visiting Purgatory (Durango Mountain Resort), Durango, Silverton and the surrounding San Juan mountains for decades. During that time, we have enjoyed many properties at the resort and in Durango. While these properties are nice, Elkpoint was the only property that had PRIVATE PARKING FOR UP TO 3 MIDSIZE VEHICLES AS WELL AS ADDITIONAL PUBLIC PARKING, a PRIVATE ENTRANCE, a PRIVATE DECK, DEDICATED GREENSPACE, and the ability to SKI/BIKE IN AND SKI/BIKE OUT from the back door. Maybe it was never having to worry about parking, elevators, shuttles, or a lack of space? Maybe it was sitting on the deck in the summer and enjoying the cool air? Maybe it was the backyard wiffle ball and football with the kids or just sitting in the soft green grass with our friends? Whatever it was, one stay in Elkpoint and we knew we found our mountain home.
WINTER SEASON HIGHLIGHTS: Elkpoint 8 is a true “ski-in ski-out” property. Many make the claim but, at Elkpoint 8, slip on your ski boots and hop off the private deck right onto the run. Our townhome is one of only seven luxury homes that can deliver this experience. Feel like tackling a challenging run? Then, take the black diamond runs Lower Hades or Brimstone and ski right back to the deck. Feeling a bit more like cruising groomers back to the property for cozy, private lunch with the family? No problem. Take the green run YBR and relax as you glide back down to the deck.
If you are not a skier, you’ll enjoy yourself sitting next to the fire enjoying a beverage and the views from the 20 ft floor to ceiling windows. From this cozy vantage point, you’ll be able to see your friends and family ski by or watch the action in the terrain park.
Have kids? Sit on the back deck and watch them play in the private backyard snow while you relax. Even better, jump in and enjoy the snow yourself knowing you are steps away from the fire when you want to get warm.
Your legs need a break after a few days of downhill skiing? Snowmobiling, nordic skiing, snow cat expeditions, snow shoeing, sleigh rides, and tubing are all available from the resort. Back country skier? No problem. There is plenty of access a short distance from the resort. Are you a big mountain skier? Elkpoint 8 is the perfect launchpad to Silverton (22 miles) where you can find more extreme skiing but no resort amenities. Looking to push yourself and try new things? A little past Silverton is the town of Ouray’s ice climbing park (44 miles) with an abundance of instructors to let you try your hand at ice climbing in a cultivated ice climbing park.
Whatever your definition of winter fun is, you will find it at Elkpoint 8. Stay with us and you’ll agree Elkpoint 8 is unmatched!
SUMMER SEASON HIGHLIGHTS: In the summer, a few steps from the private deck across the main plaza is the Alpine Slide, the Mountain Coaster, bungee jumping, zip lines, a kids’ bounce house, scenic chairlift rides, and horseback riding.
Want to send it on Purgatory’s legendary downhill bike trails? No problem. The Lower Hades/YBR trails next to the deck offer easy access to the Purgatory Express Lift. Want some 4-wheel fun? Go karts are located on resort as well.
Looking for fun outside the resort? Elkpoint 8 is the perfect place to launch your 4x4 expedition. Famous trails including Blackbear Pass, Ophir Pass, and Poughkeepsie Gulch are nearby with Jeep rentals and guided tours in Silverton and Ouray. Prefer a less bumpy trip to backcountry beauty? No problem there either. Many hikes with incredible beauty are nearby including 2 of our favorites—hiking to Engineer Mountain from Coal Bank Pass and hiking to Ice Lake just outside Silverton.
PURGATORY AREA HIGHLIGHTS: The resort offers a wide variety of events including Music in the Mountains Festival, demo days, ski races, wine events, beer tasting events, culinary events, and bike races. Check out https://www.purgatoryresort.com to learn more.
It is a short 30-minute drive (27 miles) to Durango to access all the shops, restaurants, and bars town has to offer. Don’t feel like making the drive or you just prefer a more laid-back experience? Don’t worry. The resort has great food with an amazing apres ski and bike scene at Purgy’s. Prefer to explore? The area around Purgatory has many offerings including a more traditional dining setting at the Sow’s Ear restaurant at Silverpick (1.1 miles), the Nugget Mountain Bar (0.8 miles) with the Backcountry Gourmet food truck offering delicious food and beverages you can enjoy indoor or next to the outdoor fire pits, and the Olde Schoolhouse Café (2.8 miles) offering pizza, wings, and beverages. Forgot something? Needles Country store (2.7 miles) offers gas and light groceries if needed.
PROPERTY DESCRIPTION: Elkpoint 8 is a nearly 3000 sq. ft. mid-century mountain, 3 level townhome located on the Lower Hades and YBR runs next to the Needles and Purgatory Express Lifts. The 3 level, 5 bedroom and 4-bathroom layout is designed for comfort, privacy, and enjoyment with sleeping and bathroom accommodations on each level. High speed, wireless internet with ample signal on each level makes turning your vacation into a "Flexcation" easier than ever. The home has a Culligan reverse osmosis system to provide on demand filtered, drinking water. We understand this may seem trivial, but our water is very hard and this provides ready, delicious water without using large numbers of plastic bottles. The home also has a Culligan water softener to ensure your comfort.
The first level has a private oversized garage with plenty of space for your skis and bikes. On the same level, the “Adventure Room” awaits featuring some of our favorite areas in the surrounding San Juan mountains. The Adventure Room is an oversized bedroom/game room/just put the kids in there for some peace and quiet room with full size bunkbeds, queen sleeper sofa, TV, and full bathroom.
The second level is the main living and dining area. As you can see from the photos, there is plenty of space to eat, relax, and enjoy everyone’s company. The gourmet kitchen is located on the same level so that you can enjoy expansive views of the mountain from the nearly 20-foot windows while cooking and entertaining. The “First Tracks” bedroom highlights our love of skiing. The First Tracks room has a king size bed with a memory foam mattress and a private balcony. The “Fat Tire” bedroom has 2 twin beds celebrates one of our other passions—mountain biking—and is located next to this level’s full bathroom.
The third level includes the “Durango Classic” bedroom and the “Alpine Suite” master bedroom. The Durango Classic bedroom has a queen bed and is a tribute to the West and memories of Purgatory’s past. The Classic Durango bedroom is adjacent to its dedicated full bathroom. The Alpine Suite has a king size bed, fireplace, oversize bathroom with 2 sinks, a walk-in closet, jacuzzi tub, and a private balcony. Imagine finishing your day in the jacuzzi tub and then relax next to the fire with a book or your favorite TV program. After a minute, you’ll realize how relaxed you are and glance up only to see the Three Sisters (mountains) greeting you from across the valley before you settle back in.
PLEASE NOTE: We are absolutely, positively NO SMOKING.

True ski in ski out for family
We have rented “ski in ski outs” for years and years. But we get to those places and there is always walking or even driving involved. This place was above the 6 man chair. So we put our skis on at the porch and skied down to the lift. The cabin allowed for a totally different dynamic. No more early morning hassle trying to get a good parking spot, no more long lines for lunch, everyone was headquartered at the cabin with a relaxed come and go attitude and it provided much more quality family time. Very clean. Good kitchen with good utensils. Friendly owner/manager.

We have stayed in this townhouse several times. As the property description states, it is one of the best located ski-in/ski-out condos available at any mountain. The owner is always helpful and friendly and the condo is well stocked.

Awesome location
This house was awesome! We had 13 people, 6 adults and 7 kids. House was spacious. Comfortable. Well stocked. Kyle, the property manager was responsive and helpful. The ski in/ski out was excellent- walk right out the back door and a few (small, uphill) steps to the slopes. There is a slight walk (less than 5 minutes) to the ski school, but very easy and manageable. After skiing (and before!), the kids played in the backyard in the snow for hours- sledding, building snowmen, digging holes. The hot tub is in the main lodge, about a 3 minute walk away. I was worried it would be crowded, but we never had a hard time finding space, even with 5 or 6 of us. Would definitely recommend this house and will be staying here again!

2022 Family Christmas Vacation
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this property! It was perfect for the number of people we had and for the convenience of ski-in/ski-out. Everyone was able to "do their own thing" and "at their own pace" since they could literally come back to the condo anytime they wanted for lunch or just to rest and relax. The owner even had a Christmas tree set up for us so it was perfect to spend Christmas in and enjoy our gift-giving fun. We also played games in the spacious living area while sharing stories of our day on the slopes. Definitely recommend this property to anyone looking for a great ski-in/ski-out location at this resort.

Great location!
All was beautiful! Kitchen was well furnished! And had coffee creamer by carnation… lol.. Animals that came to meet and greet … we fun and and on Wednesday carloads went different ways … while we stayed back! Watched TV the sound system was the greatest! And Kyle stopped by to do something on the lower floor… but we hit him with the fix it list of little things! Got the fireplace going before the cool rain and thunderstorm! But the ice maker and water dispenser on the refrigerator was not working … Kyle thinks it needed a board… maybe he said mother board …, electronics are great but not when they decide not to work! Bosch appliances… really nice! Everything was very comfortable and nice to have a playpen and chair for baby… 9 months old!
Teens stayed in the lower room… Cousins playing together… age less than 1 to 27!
Cooking turned out great!
I think anyone who chose this property would be happy with their stay!

3 Family Spring Break Fun
Last week my family and two other families had the opportunity to rent this terrific condo right at the base of the ski slopes in Purgatory. Our group (6 adults and 6 14-16 year old boys) had a great time. The condo was spacious, clean and very convenient to everything. We basically didn't leave the property once. Boys explored a bit, but parents hung at the house. The kitchen was very equipped and we had brought all of our preplanned meals from Scottsdale and took turns cooking. The owner Jason was great to work with and always go back to me about my questions quickly.
Overall a great experience and we would consider renting again.
Thanks you!
A few small things to mention:
- This rental has many things "in stock" in the fridge and pantry. Other places I have rented in the past are very sparse, so I have learned to pack all our own spices and condiments. I should have asked Jason, because they had a large array of spices and a few left over condiments in the fridge - which we did use some off and left some of ours behind for the next guests.
- The downstairs room (Adventure room) was very warm by comparison to the rest of the house. Even after we turned off all the heat.
- While the kitchen was equipped and had everything we needed, we noticed the knives were very dull. Perhaps time to sharpen or replace?
