An almost 4 km long tunnel built under the Du Toitskloof mountains providing a route that is shorter (by 11 km) and faster. This tunnel was constructed by Italian prisoners of war among others. Work began in 1942 and 1945 because of the World War 1. In 1984 work began ending in March 1988.
