There is a place in the Porto Conte Natural Park where nature and history meet at the most beautiful time of day. It's called Monte Murone, a spur of Monte Doglia, and at sunset it becomes one of the most extraordinary viewpoints in all of Sardinia.
With your local guide Simone, you'll set off at 6:00 PM, when the light begins to warm and the scent of the Mediterranean scrub fills the air. The approximately 4 km loop trail is easy and suitable for everyone, but along the way it hides a historical surprise that few know about.
The remains of the 103rd Murone Coastal Battery emerge from the vegetation: emplacements for 149/12 howitzers, underground bunkers, underground passageways, and shelters for soldiers. It was built during World War II in anticipation of an Allied landing in the harbour of Porto Conte.
Those structures remained there, silent, swallowed up by the vegetation, telling a storey of waiting and tension that never led to conflict.
Then, upon reaching the summit, the panorama opens onto Capo Caccia and the sea: the sun plunges into the water before you in a show that alone is worth the trip to Sardinia.
