Oriental Bay (Pass by)
Wellingtons Most Popular beach built from ship ballast sand bought over from England, further developed by Wellington city council bringing golden sand from Golden Bay. Originally named Duppa because of its sole resident of Mr Duppa renamed it Oriental bay after the ship The Oriental that arrived in Wellington on in 1840. The Area was originally farmland and used as a quarantine with a nurse and tent on the beach and by whalers which resulted in a pungent odour from the boiled whale blubbers settlements of the area started in the 1880s and was expanded with development of public amenities in the early 1900s such as the "Te Aro Baths " and "The Band Rothunda" in 1918
