What you can expect
Begin your journey with a scenic walk through some of the most beautiful tea estates, offering sweeping landscapes and panoramic mountain views throughout the journey. Along the way, see the tea pluckers — often referred to as the “tea ladies” — dressed in colourful attire as they skilfully harvest leaves from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, rain or shine. Using remarkable speed and precision, they pluck only “two leaves and a bud,” the standard for quality tea.
Have the opportunity to join the tea pluckers for about half an hour, trying your hand at this traditional technique. The experience continues with a visit to one of the tea ladies’ homes, where you’ll be welcomed with a cup of freshly brewed tea — a simple yet meaningful glimpse into plantation life. A picnic lunch amidst the tea fields adds to the charm, allowing you to relax while surrounded by rolling green hills. Throughout the day, you’ll encounter few — if any — other tourists, making this a truly authentic Sri Lankan experience that you’re sure to treasure.
The trail then leads you on a scenic journey from Haputale to the legendary viewpoint of Lipton’s Seat — a location that perfectly blends natural beauty with colonial tea heritage. Walking through lush plantations in the cool mountain air, you’ll gradually ascend towards one of the island’s most celebrated panoramas.
At the summit, stand where tea pioneer Sir Thomas Lipton once surveyed his vast tea empire. From this remarkable vantage point, enjoy sweeping 360-degree views of valleys, reservoirs, and endless tea estates stretching across the highlands. A highlight here is the life-sized statue of Sir Thomas Lipton seated on a bench — an ideal photo opportunity and a tribute to the man who helped introduce Ceylon tea to the world.
Your experience concludes with a visit to the historic Dambatenne Tea Factory, built in 1890 by Sir Thomas Lipton. During the factory tour, learn about the complete journey of tea from leaf to cup — including withering, rolling, fermentation, drying, and grading. The visit ends, fittingly, with a cup of freshly brewed local tea, allowing you to savour the authentic flavours cultivated in the very plantations you’ve just explored.
