What you can expect
Discover Makassar’s history, local culture, and coastal beauty on this private tour featuring a memorial, a traditional village, Japanese wartime bunkers, a scenic boat crossing, and a sunset. Discover a different side of South Sulawesi.
Your journey begins with pickup from your hotel, airport, or another agreed location in Makassar. Our first stop is the Sacrifice of 40,000 Souls Monument on Jalan Korban 40000 Jiwa, Tallo District. This memorial recalls a tragic chapter in South Sulawesi’s history during the struggle against Dutch colonial rule. Learn about its significance in local memory.
Next, we travel to the riverside and board a traditional boat for an approximately 30-minute crossing to Lakkang Island. Enjoy waterways, greenery, and riverside settlements.
On arrival, we explore an authentic Makassar village where daily life unfolds in a quieter setting. Walk around the village, observe local life, and appreciate Lakkang’s natural environment.
We will also visit a Japanese bunker dating from the occupation period of World War II. These remains offer a glimpse into the area’s wartime history. Your guide will explain their historical context. Please follow local guidance around uneven or restricted areas.
After exploring Lakkang, we return to Makassar by traditional boat and continue by private vehicle towards Mandai, near the former airport area. Here, we visit another Japanese wartime bunker and discover more traces of the region’s military past. Access and site conditions may vary according to local circumstances.
In the late afternoon, we head to Losari Beach, a famous Makassar waterfront landmark. Enjoy the sea breeze, coastal atmosphere, and sunset views across the horizon. Take photographs and watch the sky change colour.
Our final stop is the iconic 99 Domes Mosque in the Centre Point of Indonesia waterfront area. The mosque is known for its distinctive architecture and colourful domes. Admire the exterior and enjoy the coastal surroundings. Interior access depends on opening arrangements and prayer activities, so visitors should dress respectfully.
At the end of the tour, we transfer you back to your hotel, airport, or another agreed location in Makassar. The itinerary may change depending on traffic, weather, boat availability, and conditions at each destination.
This tour combines history, village life, wartime heritage, architecture, and sunset views. It is ideal for travellers interested in local culture and lesser-known places. Discover Makassar at a relaxed pace with private transport and a route combining historical stops with coastal scenery. Along the way, ask questions and pause for photos. The boat crossing is part of the experience, although schedules may change with weather and local conditions. Comfortable walking shoes, sun protection, and drinking water are recommended. Respect the village and its history.
