What you can expect

  • Discover Matsumoto’s castle-town atmosphere on a guided walk connecting local shopping streets, historic lanes, waterways, and the striking exterior of Matsumoto Castle.

Meet your guide outside the Oshiro-guchi, or Castle Exit, of Matsumoto Station near the station information board. Begin with a short introduction to the route and learn how Matsumoto developed around its castle, merchant streets, and network of spring-fed waterways.

Walk towards Nawate Street, a compact pedestrian street lined with small shops, cafés, traditional snacks, antiques, and the district’s well-known frog decorations. Explore the street’s relaxed atmosphere while your guide introduces local stories and points out details that are easy to miss when walking alone.

Continue through the surrounding castle-town streets. Pass narrow lanes, old-style shopfronts, small shrines, bridges, and flowing waterways that reveal how daily life developed between the former castle grounds and merchant districts.

Approach Matsumoto Castle from the outer moat and enjoy views of its distinctive black exterior reflected across the water. Learn why the castle is sometimes called the Crow Castle and hear how its defensive structures, moats, and surrounding town were designed.

Follow the moat to several outdoor viewpoints where the castle appears against trees, bridges, and, on clear days, the mountains beyond the city. Your guide can help take natural travel photos using your own smartphone or camera.

The tour focuses on the castle exterior and surrounding grounds. Admission to the castle interior is not included unless otherwise stated, allowing more time to explore the townscape, moat, and quieter streets nearby.

Finish with a walk through additional castle-town lanes, where traditional architecture, local businesses, and waterways create a calmer contrast with the main castle plaza.

This is primarily a guided history and local-culture walk rather than a professional photography lesson. Photo support is included, but the main focus is understanding Matsumoto through its castle, streets, water, and everyday local atmosphere.

The tour finishes near Matsumoto Castle or the surrounding castle-town area, where you can continue into the castle, return to Nawate Street, or explore nearby cafés and shops independently.
