Immerse yourself in the year 1598 and accompany Maria Schmidt as she recounts her life as a “disreputable woman.” She is married to Master Frantz Schmidt, the famous executioner of Nuremberg, and lives with him and their children in the executioner's house on the Pegnitz River.
Learn more from Maria about life in the early modern period with all its challenges. Maria talks about civil rights and punishments of shame, diseases and remedies, the threat of flooding and the situation of women, and above all about honour and dishonor.
