What you can expect

Day 1 – Dunhuang: Mogao Caves & Desert Landscapes

Begin your journey in Dunhuang with a visit to the world-famous Mogao Caves, a UNESCO World Heritage site renowned for its ancient Buddhist murals and sculptures carved into cliffside grottoes along the historic Silk Road.

In the afternoon, explore the sweeping desert scenery of Mingsha Mountain and Crescent Moon Spring, where towering sand dunes surround a tranquil oasis. As the sun sets, enjoy the unique desert landscape and take memorable photos.

In the evening, stroll through the lively Shazhou Night Market, where you can sample local snacks and experience the vibrant atmosphere of Dunhuang.

Day 2 – Jiayuguan: Western End of the Great Wall

Depart from Dunhuang and travel along the historic Silk Road to Jiayuguan.

Visit the impressive Jiayuguan Pass, the westernmost fortress of the Ming Great Wall and an important military stronghold that once guarded the gateway between China and Central Asia.

Continue to the dramatic Overhanging Great Wall, where sections of the wall climb steeply along the desert hillside, offering panoramic views of the surrounding landscape.

Overnight in Jiayuguan.

Day 3 – Great Wall Heritage & Rainbow Mountains

In the morning, visit the Great Wall First Beacon Tower, also known as the First Beacon Tower of the Great Wall. This historic watchtower marked the starting point of the Ming Dynasty Great Wall and once played a crucial role in the ancient defence system.

Afterwards, continue the scenic drive through the Hexi Corridor to Zhangye.

In the afternoon, explore the spectacular Zhangye Danxia National Geological Park, famous for its colourful “Rainbow Mountains.” The layered red, yellow, and orange rock formations create one of China’s most extraordinary geological landscapes.

Day 4 – Zhangye: Giant Buddha & Canyon Adventure

Start the day with a visit to Zhangye Giant Buddha Temple, home to one of the largest reclining Buddha statues in China and an important historical site along the Silk Road.

Then head to Pingshanhu Grand Canyon for a deep exploration of its dramatic canyon landscapes. This remarkable area combines Danxia formations, Yadan landforms, and rugged canyon terrain formed over millions of years.

Your experience includes a shuttle ride into the canyon and scenic hiking routes through narrow passages and striking rock formations. The tour also includes a camel ride along the canyon route, offering a unique Silk Road perspective as you explore the red-colored cliffs and valleys that make this area a favourite for photography.
