What you can expect
Day 1: Addis Ababa to Axum
Begin your journey with a morning flight to Shire Airport, followed by a drive to Axum, Ethiopia's most ancient city and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Spend the afternoon exploring the towering stelae fields, ancient tombs, and the Church of St. Mary of Zion, which claims to hold the Ark of the Covenant.
Day 2: Axum to Hawzen via Adwa and Yeha
Drive east towards Hawzen, stopping at the Adwa Mountains, where Ethiopian forces defeated Italian colonial troops in 1896. Continue to the Temple of Yeha, a pre-Axumite stone temple built around 700 BC, older than the Axumite Empire itself, standing largely intact in a small highland village.
Day 3: Gheralta Church Cluster
Embark on a journey to the Gheralta churches, which require effort to reach but reward every step. Visit Mariam Korkor and Daniel Korkor, perched high on the cliff face, and admire the carved doorways and interior walls covered in centuries-old paintings of saints and angels. Spend the afternoon at Mariam Papsit, each church distinct in architecture, fresco style, and the particular quality of silence inside.
Day 4: Abune Yemata and St. George Maykado
Climb barefoot across an exposed rock face to reach Abune Yemata, a church inside a cave overlooking a valley that drops hundreds of metres below. Marvel at the frescoes, among the best preserved in Tigray. In the afternoon, visit St. George Maykado, a quieter, less visited, yet equally remarkable church.
Day 5: Wukro Cluster and Flight to Addis
Visit the Wukro churches, starting with Abraha we Atsibeha, the largest rock-hewn church in the region, known for its impressive interior columns and carved ceiling. Continue to Wukro Cherkos, partially inside a cave, with its oldest sections dating to the 4th century. Drive to Mekele for the evening flight back to Addis Ababa.
Day 6: Addis Ababa
Spend a final day in the capital, visiting Lucy at the National Museum, exploring Merkato market, enjoying a panoramic view from Entoto Hills, and experiencing a traditional coffee ceremony before a farewell dinner.
