Activity itinerary

Castel del Monte

  • 3h
Perched on a gentle green hill, the white marble fortress of Castel del Monte is an example of medieval architecture. Built under Frederick II of Swabia, it reflects the Emperor's humanist ideas. Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire and later King of Sicily, he was one of the most fascinating figures in medieval history and the protagonist of many legends. He was passionate about mathematics, poetry, philosophy, and astronomy, so he welcomed Greek, Arab, Italian, and Jewish scholars to his court. This octagonal building harmoniously blends elements of classical architecture with decorations typical of Arab architecture in Europe. The number eight's recurrence makes the Castel del Monte fortress an esoteric place, but some scholars hypothesized it could even be a hammam. While admiring the formal perfection of this UNESCO World Heritage Site, you can discuss with your guide the possible functions of this impressive fortress.

Trani

  • 2h
Trani is a beautiful town in Italy known for its stunning Apulian Romanesque-style cathedral and the charming seafront. The town is dominated by Federico II Castle, a remarkable defensive structure dating back to the 12th century. Trani was once a Roman settlement and grew during the Longobard era. Later on, it became an important trade hub and logistics base for the Maritime Republics. Trani also had a thriving Jewish community until their expulsion in 1541. The Scolanova Synagogue, built in the 12th century, is still active and is a testament to the town's rich history.

Bari

  • 3h
Bari is a city rich in history and culture. The magnificent San Nicola Basilica is a must-see for its architecture, which enshrines Catholic and Greek testimony and the body of the most beloved saint. It boasts several attractions, including three important theatres, attesting to a flourishing cultural activity. Its Castle dates back to 1100 and was used as a fortress, a prison, or a residence till 1700. Follow your guide along the alleys of Bari to experience the beauty of its architecture and the charm of its streets, where women still prepare the famous orecchiette pasta with the ancient recipe.
