What you can expect
Enjoy a private excursion into the waters off of Kaikoura to see a pod of New Zealand fur seals in person. This delightful tour lets you get up close to the playful creatures as you swim or snorkel with a guide. On your way, learn about the mammals and their habits from an expert.
Start your journey in Kaikoura, where you meet your knowledgeable guide before transferring to a boat on the coast. Your guide takes you cruising out into the water, making for a spot frequented by the New Zealand fur seals. Along the way, learn about the seals, which are called kekeno in the Maori language, from your guide and discover their importance to the country.
Upon arriving at your seal-spotting location, gear up with a wetsuit and snorkelling equipment. Your guide briefs you on how to interact with the animals before you jump in the water, at which point you're free to observe them as you please. Get just 10 feet (3 metre) away from the seals as they twirl in the waves, and ask your guide about their playful habits. After a while to swim with the seals, climb back into your boat and head back to shore to shower and end your tour.
