Overview

Travel beyond York on a private driven tour to the Yorkshire coast, taking in castle ruins, abbey views, gothic legends, historic towns and dramatic sea air.
Starting beside York Minster, the route heads north through the countryside to Pickering Castle before continuing towards Whitby Abbey, one of Yorkshire’s most atmospheric landmarks. You’ll also have time to experience Whitby itself, with its harbour, old streets, coastal views and famous links to Dracula.
From Whitby, the journey follows the coast towards Scarborough Castle before returning to York for a final stop at Clifford’s Tower.

From the outside, we’ll look at the Minster’s scale, architecture and place in the storey of the city — from Roman York and medieval religion to saints, kings, pilgrims and the legends that still cling to the streets around it. This is an exterior stop, so entry is not required. Guests can enjoy the views, take photos, and get a strong sense of why York Minster has dominated the city’s skyline for centuries.

Pickering Castle

Our route continues north to Pickering Castle, a striking ruined fortress with deep Norman roots and sweeping views over the surrounding town and countryside. Once a royal castle, hunting lodge and defensive stronghold, Pickering helps tell the storey of medieval power in Yorkshire — from conquest and control to the lives of those who lived and worked around the castle walls. This is a scenic and historic stop, with time to view the castle from the outside and take photographs. Entry is optional and not required to enjoy the stop.

Whitby Abbey

The abbey is famously associated with St Hild, early Christianity in Northumbria, and later with Bram Stoker’s Dracula, which helped make Whitby one of Britain’s most atmospheric coastal towns. Guests can admire the abbey from the outside, take in the clifftop views, and hear the stories that make this one of the most memorable stops on the route. Entry is optional and not required.

Whitby Harbour

There will be time to explore, take photographs, grab refreshments, or walk part of the old town depending on the pace of the day. Highlights may include the harbour, the 199 Steps, St Mary’s Church, the old streets below the abbey, and views across the coast. This stop gives guests a chance to experience Whitby’s atmosphere properly, not just pass through it.

Scarborough Castle

The route continues along the Yorkshire coast to Scarborough Castle, a spectacular headland fortress overlooking the sea, harbour and town. Clifford's Tower
