What you can expect

This small-group day tour takes you to parts of the Carnarvon Ranges few tourists see. Here, less than two hours from the Queensland outback town of Roma, you’ll explore a privately-owned wilderness on a working cattle station deep in remote Australian bushland.

Close to the Carnarvon Gorge National Park but far from the tourist-worn trail, your guide will introduce the diverse environment, rich with Australian fauna and flora. From the massive to the microscopic, you’ll get a sense of the region’s incredible scenery and biodiversity. You’ll visit an Indigenous site on the hidden reaches of the Dawson River and little-known Aboriginal rock art sites and caves beneath the magnificent sandstone cliffs.

Our lunch-stop in a cycad-filled gorge amid spectacular rock formations feels like an adventure in a prehistoric landscape. Then, a highlight of the tour is emerging to the incredible scenic view of the Arcadia Valley hundreds of metres below.

MORNING: Depart Roma by 4x4 mini-bus (commentary on the local region, legends and landmarks). You'll arrive at Wallaroo Station in the Carnarvon Ranges. You'll be provided with deep insights about cultural sites along the picturesque Dawson River including the ‘Axe Factory, before enjoying a relaxing morning tea by the river, deep in the Australian bush.

This region is rich in Indigenous rock art sites, and you'll visit some notable examples to learn more about their significance and the original peoples who roamed this land. It’s hard to believe this wild and diverse country is also a cattle property
but there’s much to be learnt here about how man and nature co-exist in harmony.

MIDDAY: Lunch is in a Cycad gorge – a spectacular spot with its prehistoric plants and impressive rock formations such as Arch Rock.

There are more incredible sandstone formations to see in the afternoon, including the unique colours of Rainbow Cave. After a day up close to the details of the remote bushland, the view of Arcadia Valley hundreds of metres below will take your breath away!

As you tour the rich and varied landscape, spot the local fauna and flora – part of the precious biodiversity far from urban intrusion. Look out for rock wallabies and the secretive leaf-tailed gecko! Your specialist guide will help you understand the ecological significance of what you see.

MID-AFTERNOON: Enjoy final refreshments while absorbing the inspiring view of Sphinx Rock before returning to Injune and Roma for a 6pm arrival in Roma

This discovery is for lovers of wild Australia, where the land still has the power to leave a lasting impression.
