Overview

  • It's 7:30 in the morning, the lagoon still grey with sleep. You get on board and count: one, two… six. That's it. No group stepping on it, no waiting. Just you, and a Guide who knows these waters like a loved face.

    Under the hull, you dip a hydrophone — and silence becomes a song. Serious, ancient: a male, invisible, under your feet.

    Farther away, a mother, who came from Antarctica to give birth in these warm waters. She's not here for you, she's here for her little one. And perhaps that's what's most upsetting: to be a discreet witness to a moment we let you share.

    If conditions permit, you slide into the water. A few metres away, a huge shape moves, slow, unreal. Fifteen metres. Twenty tonnes. One eye looking at you, one second. You're not breathing.

    You'll never tell it quite right then. You'll have to say, “I was there.” Six. No more.

    The season lasts a few months. The seats, a few minutes.

Activity itinerary

100 metres from the boat, the life-changing encounter. From July to November, humpback whales leave Antarctica to reproduce in the warm waters of Polynesia. A short window, a unique appointment. Maximum 6 people, not one more. Polynesian law allows 6 swimmers in the water at a time, when most boats carry 12. At Eloa Tahiti, there is only you, your group, and the ocean. Underwater, a professional hydrophone captures the song of the whales live, a vibration that few people will ever feel. The silence, a breath in the distance, the guide's signal: you slip into the water and swim about 100 metres to reach one of the planet's largest animals. Observation remains the priority; going into the water will only happen if weather, safety, and whale behaviour allow it (observation only for those under 12 and non-swimmers). Programme includes: luxury boat, safety equipment and snorkelling provided, fresh juice, local drinks and fruits, certified guide, small group. The season is short and the spots at 6 go fast. 4 hours, 6 people maximum, observation and hydrophone included.
