What you can expect

Discover the hidden lagoons of the Poio River in northern Portugal on a guided hike designed for nature lovers who want more than a simple walk. The river rises in the Alvão mountain range and flows through a dramatic granite valley, shaping clear pools and waterfalls that create natural “amphitheatres” for a refreshing swim and relaxing water massage.

Meet your guides in Vila de Cerva and head to the trailhead to begin a linear out-and-back route that follows the riverbed and rocky terrain. Along the way, enjoy constant scenery changes—granite boulders, small cascades, and inviting lagoons—while your guide manages logistics and safety. The highlight is the emblematic Cai D’Alto waterfall, around 60 metres high, forming a spectacular lagoon and one of the most memorable photo spots of the day.

This is a moderate hike (Level II) that requires prior hiking experience, good physical condition, and steady balance, with steep sections and uneven ground that demands attention. A snack break is included in the schedule (bring your own food), and there is time planned for swimming when conditions are safe. Finish the hike back at the end point in the afternoon with the feeling you’ve explored one of Portugal’s most beautiful and lesser-known river valleys.
