What you can expect

  • Discover Wakayama City on this locally guided tour, beginning at Wakayama Castle, built in 1585 as the former residence of the Kishu Tokugawa clan.

The white castle tower atop Mt. Torafusu offers a 360-degree view of the city, while a stroll through the Nishinomaru-Teien (Momijidani) garden reveals the elegance of feudal Japan.

Continue to Kimiidera Temple, founded in 770 AD and known for its early-blooming cherry blossoms and 231-step 'Step of Good Luck' staircase. From the main hall, enjoy views over sparkling Wakanoura Bay.

Next, enjoy fresh seafood and the daily tuna-filleting show at Kuroshio Market in Wakayama Marina City.

Finish with a walk along Wakanoura Bay, celebrated by poets for centuries and home to the arched stone Furobashi bridge and seaside shrines.

All four core stops sit within Wakayama City and its coastline, about 10.5km end to end, so the public-transport plan covers this same route.

The private-vehicle plan covers the same four sights and adds Kishu Toshogu Shrine, perched on Mt. Saika directly above a cove of Wakaura Bay.

Built in 1621 by Tokugawa Yorinobu for his father Ieyasu, the shrine is nicknamed 'Nikko of Kansai' for its lavish carvings attributed to master craftsman Hidari Jingoro and wall paintings by Kano Tan'yu. It is reached via a steep flight of stone stairs.

The itinerary can be adjusted within the tour's allotted time to suit your interests.
