5 Reasons to Put the NT at the Top of your Bucket List

We all say we’re going to do the Top End “one day”, but, really, what are we waiting for? With Darwin and Alice Springs only a 3-4hr flight away, and so many awesome deals, a Top End getaway has never been cheaper or easier. But if you want more convincing (or just want to do some holi-daydreaming), check out our top 5 reasons to put the NT at the top of your bucket list.

1. Uluru
Australia’s spiritual, cultural, and even geographical heart, Uluru is awesome. And I don’t mean “awesome” as in “amazing”, “exciting”, or “really cool” (although it is all of those things) – I mean it literally inspires awe. Check out a sunrise tour for an incredible natural light show – I promise it’s worth the early wake-up call.

2. Unique Indigenous cultures
Australia’s Indigenous cultures are the oldest in the world, which is pretty damn amazing. The NT’s museums, galleries, cultural tours, and festivals will immerse you in the stories, art, and traditions of the Arrernte, Yolngu, and Tiwi people, and remind you just how special this country is.

3. Kakadu
Bright red rocks, lush green trees, thundering waterfalls, ancient rock art… Kakadu is no ordinary national park. Do your research if you want to explore on your own (phone reception is poor, so you really don’t want to get lost) or leave the planning to the experts with an easy day tour.

4. Katherine Gorge
While you’re in the Kakadu neighbourhood (if a 19,804 km² national park counts as a neighbourhood), make sure you check out Katherine Gorge! Join a tour for a cruise through the gorge, spotting freshwater crocs as you go, then cool off with a dip at Edith Falls (far away from the aforementioned crocs).

5. Mindil Beach Sunset Market
Worn out from all those day trips and national parks? No prob! Head to Mindil Beach for awesome markets, exciting fire shows, delicious food, and one of the world’s most incredible sunsets. PRO TIP: It’s BYO, so pack a cooler bag (or an esky) if you want a beer on the beach.
