Traditional Cretan stone cottage on the semi-rural outskirts of Kefalas, Vamos
Villa Oreastro Guest House is a purpose built traditional stone cottage in the Apokoronas region of the Chania prefecture. The house aimed at couples and is finished and equipped to a very high standard. The traditional stone walls and arches, stone floors and terraces, and beamed ceilings all contribute to a rustic Cretan feel.
Tucked away in an olive grove, in approximately 2 acres of land, it has its own private garden and a spacious roof terrace with panoramic views over the White Mountains and nearby Kefalas. Kefalas is a traditional village with all the essential amenities, including 2 supermarkets, kafeneions, tavernas, and a cheese factory about a 10-minute walk away. The bustling village of Vamos is about 6km away.
There are numerous blue flag beaches within easy reach (15-20 minutes by car). The most spectacular of all (and also our 'local') is Octopus Bay, approximately 6km. Not a beach as such, but more like a spectacular plunge pool in the sea, excellent for snorkeling and similar activities. Walking trails with incredible views, historic landmarks and beautiful scenery crisscross the area.
The guest house is ideal for couples who wish to escape hectic city life and enjoy the fresh air and beautiful views in a relaxing, peaceful rural setting. It is a perfect location for exploring the Apokoronas region of Chania, Central, and Western Crete, or simply lazing about!
The Venetian towns of Chania and Rethymno are each about 35 minutes by car. Kefalas provides easy access to the wide range of attractions Western Crete has to offer, including Samaria Gorge, Gramvousa, Balos, Elafonisi, Lake Kournas, Aptera, and Falasarna. Heraklion (and Knossos) is approximately 2 hours by car. South coast locations such as Paleachora, Sougia, Loutro, Plakias, Damnoni, Agia Galini, and even as far as Matala can all be reached on a day trip We provide our guests with a map of local attractions, and also numerous guides and booklets of ideas for walks and places to visit, so don't worry if you arrive without any firm ideas of what you'd like to do during your stay. You certainly won't be bored!
Closer to base, you'll find some delightful local towns and villages such as Vamos, Vryses, Georgiopoli, Almyrida, Kalyves and many more. There are some excellent beaches, and archaeological attractions. With our local knowledge, we can provide you with details of off-the-beaten track places to visit, walks, and excursions. As owners, we live here year-round and keep a number of animals, including cats, dogs, and a number of hens and 2 sheep!
Back to the house: The house (indoor space) itself is 50 square meters in size. French doors from the lounge and bedroom lead to a ground floor terrace of approximately 30 square meters. The roof terrace can be reached by an external stone staircase, offering a further 50 square meters of living space.
Lounge The lounge is open-plan to the kitchen, linked by a traditional stone arch. Here, you will find comfortable seating in the form of a single French daybed, which can also be used to sleep an additional person during the summer months. A wood-burning stove provides warmth and cooking facilities during cooler months. French doors lead to the downstairs terrace and garden.
Kitchen The kitchen is compact, but with all the essentials:

Bedroom The bedroom features exposed stone walls and French doors leading onto the terrace. Insect screens throughout the house ensure that you won't be disturbed by mosquitoes. A ceiling fan allows for efficient circulation of air to keep you comfortable.
We know very well that an uncomfortable bed can spoil a great holiday. Therefore, we have opted for a king size (5 foot) bed with orthopedic mattress and fine luxurious French linen bedding - ensuring a comfortable night's sleep.
The wardrobe has both hanging space (with hangers) and shelves / drawers, with an additional chest of drawers providing extra space.
Bedding & Towels Luxury bedding is provided to suit the climate at the time of your visit. This includes French linen bedding, silk / cotton duvet, and a selection of natural pillows. We give you a choice of soft to firm pillows, all from natural materials, as well as quilts, blankets, and throws for every season. You might find yourself lingering in bed just a bit longer than you had intended.
We provide luxury light-weight towels. If you prefer traditional towels, these can be provided.
In the bathroom: The bathroom is beautifully finished to a very high standard. It is equipped with a drench shower and also a hand-held attachment, sink and toilet. We supply shampoo, shower gel, and hand-wash liquid, which you are welcome to use. A hair dryer is also provided.
Access to the house The house is completely detached and separate from the main house, with its own private front door entrance and two sets of French doors leading to a private back garden. The house has its own dedicated parking space.
Garden & Terraces The garden terrace (reached through the lounge or bedroom) has a dining space, an outdoor shower, a pergola and various olive trees, providing welcome shade. The garden area includes some new fruit trees, herbs, grasses and flowers, with a carpet of cool ground cover. A BBQ grill is available for outdoor cooking during spring and autumn.
A stone staircase leads to the roof terrace where you'll find a further pergola, a dining table and chairs, and also reclining chairs. With its spectacular panoramic views over the White Mountains, Kefalas village and Psiloritis in the East, it is popular with guests for yoga (2 mats are provided), sunbathing, stargazing, watching sunrise and sunset, romantic dinners, and generally lazing about.
Sunbeds are not provided; however, you may wish to use the very comfortable reclining chairs instead. The terraces are sufficiently private enough for sunbathing.
Ambient lighting ensures that you can also enjoy the outdoor space at night.
Heating, Air Conditioning & Hot Water: Heating, when required, is provided by a wood-burning stove which has sufficient capacity to warm the entire house. Ceiling fans provide efficient ventilation during the summer months. The house has its own independent hot water supply. In winter months, hot water is provided by a gas boiler, so you can always be assured of a steaming hot shower every day. We're off grid! Electricity is supplied by the autonomous photo-voltaic system, installed at the main house.
Insect Nets All windows and doors are equipped with insect nets to ensure maximum fresh air and ventilation, without being troubled by mosquitoes and other insects. Some windows are also fitted with security bars, so they may be left open day and night, whether you are in or out.
Laundry The house has its own washing machine. It is simple to operate. A washing line is available on the upstairs terrace. An electric iron and ironing board are available for use by guests. Coat hangers are provided in the wardrobe.

Wonderful tranquil retreat
We enjoyed a marvellous week at this beautiful villa set amidst olive trees and with a spectacular view of the White mountains from the roof terrace. Well placed for trips to Chania, Rethymno, Aptera, the beach and local villages. The villa itself is beautifully designed and very well equipped. Fun visits from the owners' dogs and very affectionate cat! A very peaceful setting - wonderful for anyone needing to relax and unwind. We will be keen to visit again some time!

This place is a true gem, a real hideout in the midst of a wonderful nature area. The house is built with so much detail and warmth, and the hosts provided some wonderful fresh local products as sma welcome. Overall they were very helpful and offering many suggestions and tips for places to visit.
But the house has everything you will need, even if you would just want to stay home all day and relax!

Lovely house among olive groves
This was our first holiday away together without family since covid. It was very relaxing and the weather was fantastic. Itās a great location being around halfway between Chania and Rethymno. There is a lovely terrace at the property with a hot tub (which we didnāt have hot as the temperature was well in the 30ās) Altogether a lovely place to stay

Cretan haven
Perfect choice for a couple seeking a respite from city life. The cottage had everything we needed, including local provisions from the host. We were there during a heatwave, but the stone walls and ceiling fans kept us cool. We loved the magical garden and the roof terrace with views of the mountains, sunsets, and starry skies. Not to mention visits from the friendly cats and dogs. Great location for exploring the villages and beaches of the Apokoronas peninsular and further afield. We were sad to leave!

Olive grove haven
The villa was very beautiful and in a wonderfully quiet location. Perfect for us. We loved eating and reading on the terrace in the Mediterranean garden with only the sound of cicadas and the occasional sheep bell. Johanna was a very helpful, solicitous and generous hostess. We enjoyed all the places that she recommended and were made to feel welcome. We would happily visit again. Thanks very much Johanna.

Ideal work-away location
My wife and I stayed here for a week in July. The cottage is thoughtfully designed, finished to a high standard, and well equipped (sharp kitchen knives are always a mark of quality!). Even during the unprecedented temperatures, we kept cool inside the stone walls under the ceiling fans, and outside in the numerous shaded sitting spots in the lovely garden. I managed a full week of remote working (comfortable table/chairs, convenient power, and reliable WiFi). Johanna was a great host - meeting us on arrival, with lots of great local recommendations, and reliably available by phone. We were also welcomed with a well stocked fridge, which was very kind. Daily visits from the friendly cats and dogs were great, but otherwise the house, garden and roof all felt private and peaceful. The house is in a semi-rural area but is well situated for exploring this part of the island. Highly recommended.

Sitting in an olive grove, with beautiful gardens around, this is a really comfortable villa. Everything you need with a sunny rooftop area. Friendly pets around and Johanna looked after us very well.
Great walks nearby and a beautiful base for exploring the area. Two local restaurants in walking distance, a small supermarket, and Vamos with a brilliant bakery a short drive away.

Off the beaten track idyllic stone cottage oasis
The cottage completely exceeded our expectations, our stay was even better than the pictures. Wonderful attention to detail throughout and great amenities for our stay (the olive oil is the best!). The courtyard is the perfect spot for morning coffee, including the extra of the daily visits from the dogs; Teddy, Chica and Daisy who you come to adore very quickly. The rooftop deck is lovely and a great place for a workout, yoga and evening sunset views and cocktails or star gazing.
Johanna is a fantastic host. provided us with great details and researched options to our questions pre arrival. She also reached out just prior to arrival recognizing we were coming in late and offered to do some shopping for us in advance which we sincerely appreciated.
Great recommendations, beautiful location, the grounds are lovely with orange and grapefruit trees along with the beautiful wild flowers and olive trees. The village is high up in the hills, a car or e bikes are definitely a must. The area has easily accessible walking and well marked hiking trails. We had an extended stay of almost 4 weeks, we walked everywhere for a few weeks, we used the bikes and for further out exploring we had a car.
It is a remote destination, very quiet and beautiful yet easy access to the bigger destinations. Johanna thank you for such a memorable stay and experience. We thoroughly enjoyed, it was exactly what we needed.

Wonderful off the beaten track nature stay
We selected the holiday house because we were searching for a place with a garden where our toddler could roam about safely. Location was not the first thing we looked at but actually we were pleasantly surprised by this beautiful region with lovely villages and wonderful nature. We got everything we hoped for and more. We were amazed by the natural diversity in the beautifully kept garden, the house was decorated with style and it was equipped with anything you need - even herbs, olive oil from the land, soap for the washing machine, toys for the kid, chargers etc. The bed linnen was amazing and we slept well in the cottage. Some nice sandy beaches are in good reach (by car) from the property so you can combine a hike with a dive or a village tour with a drink at the beach. Only the audio sensitive might have to consider bringing noise cancellation headphones, the cicades can get quite intense at times :-)

My husband and I loved our stay at Villa Oreastro! The interior is so warm and relaxing and the upstairs porch had stunning 360deg views with stunning sunsets. Johanna was so welcoming and even made us a reservation for us ahead of time at a local Greek taverna for Greek Easter lunch (best food Iāve ever had in my life!). And to top it all off, she has the cutest pups that come visit you everyday to say hello! We hope we can return to Crete for another stay in the future!

The perfect house and location to enjoy one's holiday and to explore all that Crete has to offer!
The Villa Oreastro was key to our wonderful visit on Crete. Johanna was very welcoming and an ongoing resource - meeting us at a local kafeneon and sharing information on the ins and outs of the area. The house is well designed and beautifully laid out for a comfortable stay and greeted us with a kitchen stocked with local Cretan foods and fresh eggs from her chickens. The location was ideal - a peaceful rural setting yet close to the Chania Airport & Venetian port with easy access for excursions to beaches, gorges, Heraklion/ Knossos, traditional restaurants with music and more. The house also served as a base to explore Kefalas, surrounding villages and walking trails rich in folk traditions and ancient sites. We'll miss the view of the White Mountains from the rooftop terrace!
