Located on the southwestern tip of Mount Desert Island, Bass Harbor is a charming and authentic Maine fishing village known for its scenic harbor, working lobster boats, and rugged coastal beauty. Unlike the busier towns on the island, Bass Harbor offers a quiet, laid-back atmosphere, making it an ideal spot for those seeking a more off-the-beaten-path experience.

One of the area’s most iconic landmarks is the Bass Harbor Head Lighthouse, perched on a dramatic rocky coastline and offering one of the most photographed sunset views in Maine. The village is also home to some of the island’s freshest seafood, with local lobster shacks serving up the day’s catch straight from the harbor.

Outdoor enthusiasts can explore nearby trails in Acadia National Park, including Ship Harbor and Wonderland, both offering easy coastal walks with stunning ocean views. Bass Harbor is also the departure point for ferries to Swan’s Island and Frenchboro, perfect for adventurers looking to explore Maine’s offshore communities.

Check out our Welcome Guide for info and recommendations on the area!

-The unit is slightly unlevel making it feel as if you are actually on a Shipwreck
-These 3 cottages are the ONLY homes on this street
-The beachfront is a rocky shore like most of Maine and is not a sandy beach
-The backyard, beach, and dock are shared with the two other units
-This is waterfront that has High Tide and Low Tide. During Low Tide the water retreats and you will not be able to swim.
-Guests in the neighboring units may also have Pets

Didn't bring pets this time, but I would love to come back with my family and bring them. The from the picture window was amazing. I did yoga there each morning watching the sunrise spread across the bay. Close proximity to many trails. We had a great dinner in Southwest Harbor.

I loved the location. It had a beautiful view. It felt secluded but was also just a short drive from shops, food, and even the national park. The only concern that I had was that the shower took a very long time for the water to get hot. Other than that, it was a great place to stay. Would highly recommend.

Shipwreck Stay

We absolutely loved our two night stay at Shipwreck. The owner, Maebeth, made everything seamless. Her communication was excellent! The property is right on the water and is adorable. The view was our absolute favorite part. We could sit on the couch and look out the picture window all day. We enjoyed watching the tides and changes to the water. The cottage was very clean and had everything we needed. Even the little things like coffee, tea, filters, Pam spray, baggies, foil, etc. It was well decorated and we slept great. Yes, the floor gives you a feel like you are on a ship. It just added to the experience! The location was perfect and only 28 minutes from Acadia National Park. We loved Bass Island, definitely not as crowded as Bar Harbor. You have to visit the Bass Harbor Lighthouse at sunset (take the path to the left in the parking lot down the wooden stairs). We ate at two local restaurants and loved them both. Seafood Ketch is just minutes away, and has a lovely outdoor patio that is dog friendly. The food was great (highly recommend the homemade pecan pie) and the view was also amazing for a sunset. We also ate at the Seaside Dairy Barn. Super cute, with great food (Jerk Chicken and Burgers) and ice cream. They even had music on the property. We truly loved our stay at Shipwreck and will definitely be back the next time we visit this area!
Amazing view from the picture window!

The view is amazing! We would love to return if the beds were more comfortable and a comfortable chair for relaxing as well. Getting well rested was challenging. A hole in bathroom floor needs addressing. Other than that, beautiful area.

Location was perfect

We loved the location of cabin on quiet side of island & being so close to water. Views of the harbor from cabin & boat dock were amazing. Bedrooms are small but beds were quite comfortable. We spent majority of time in living room as couch was fine & that view was irresistible. The kitchen & bathroom need major renovation & not because of their size. Bathroom shower, flooring & rusty baseboard heater need to be replaced. Kitchen counter top was gross & I couldn’t reach any if the glasses or dishes on 2nd shelf of the kitchen cupboard. We did not cook in kitchen at all but frig worked fine. Air conditioner in living room is great but no way to move the cool air into 2 bedrooms. Floor fans would help.

Dog owners: stop searching, this is it!

As dog owners, we had a lovely stay. Not only is the property ideal in intself, but everything’s that close by is also dog friendly: restaurants, stores, parks, etc. And even if you are not a dog owner, I guarantee you will enjoy the nice view of the ocean with your morning coffee on the dock. 10/10 would recommend!

The Time Machine at Bass Harbor

My wife and I really enjoyed our stay in this quaint cottage. Willow, our American Dirus dog, did too. As soon as I exited my car next to the cottage, I drew in a deep breath of the intoxicating salt air. It was just after sunset. The solar-powered motion-activated downlights led us to the front door. That was very much appreciated. The secret door code worked, and we opened the door to find a large open room that included the living, dining, and kitchen areas. The enormous picture window that looked directly south down Bass Harbor to the Atlantic Ocean was spectacular. Within seconds, I felt like I was back home in central New Hampshire inside one of the old summer camps that still can be found on many of the lakes. You must rent this cottage if you've ever wanted to stay in a period camp. The bedrooms were tiny and the beds took up nearly 90 percent of the floor space. But that's okay, as you're just going to sleep there, right? Why waste valuable space? I think my most enjoyable aspect was playing human Tetris in the bathroom. The more you can contort your body, the more you're going to enjoy both the shower and getting to the toilet. The depression in the linoleum floor was a period old-camp touch. Seriously, I enjoyed having my foot drop down a half inch. My wife grew up spending weekends on a boat. She said walking across the big room rekindled memories of being on the Ohio River on a windy day. Yes, the cottage is out of level. Four inches alone in the kitchen.

Beautiful View… Just right for Us

Enjoyed our stay. Cool location.. felt like we were at sea… looking out the windows we were right on the water. Enjoyed dock access. Tried fishing… not much luck. Cabin wasn’t fancy, but we expected a more rustic feel. Kitchen was small but functional. Bathroom and shower very small but functional as well. A/C worked well, was modern, and cooled down the cabin, as it was unseasonably hot. Check in and out instructions were very clear.
