Secluded lakefront family retreat for a relaxing getaway in the north woods

Kingfisher will give your family a secluded, cozy cabin vacation on a beautiful northern lake. Recently this cabin has been totally renovated from top to bottom, with new exteriors, windows, electrical, furnishings and appliances but with all the charm of the north woods.
Kingfisher is part of a compound of family cabins on 40 acres set in the heart of the Chippewa National Forest. Our family has made memories here for 75 years and five generations.
This cabin is up on a bank set back about 100 feet from the lake with lake views from most of the cabin. Steps from your front door is 1000 feet of private sandy beach on a great swimming-fishing-boating lake. The sand bottom drops off very gradually, making it ideal for kids to swim safely. Round Lake is known for its great fishing, with a variety of species including walleyes, northerns, perch and panfish.
Enjoy the spectacular sunsets, star-filled skies and sometimes northern lights from our private dock. We provide 2 canoes, 2 kayaks and 2 paddleboards for our guests to use. We will give you info on renting a fishing boat on the lake or you can bring your own boat and moor it in front of our beach. Lounge, grill or picnic on your private patio. Make s’mores or hot dogs on a fire in the lakeside fire pit.
The small but efficient two-bedroom layout is perfect for a family of 5. There is a new double size bed in one bedroom. Three new bunk beds plus a play area give kids a great area to hang out and play and to sleep. A banquette which seats 6 around an antique table is a great place for meals and games or card playing. Cathedral ceilings create an open, inviting atmosphere. The cabin is set up to provide for all your needs: 250 mg high speed direct connect internet, wifi, smart television, ¾ bathroom, well supplied kitchen, linens and towels. Upon reservation confirmation, we’ll send you a detailed list of all we provide.
The seclusion of our cabins offers an ideal habitat for a variety of birds and animals. You are likely to see loons, pelicans, eagles, various ducks and geese, hummingbirds at the feeder by your cabin, deer and occasionally the kingfisher after whom the cabin is named.
Our location in the National Forest gives you great hiking and biking trails within minutes of the cabin, We will provide a notebook for your use with suggested activities in the area.
Smoking, hunting, shooting and pets are prohibited.
Judy lives at the cabins during the season and will be happy to assist you with anything you need. Please don’t hesitate to contact Judy with any questions you may have. Check out our listing for Thieves Den cabin for a slightly different cabin layout.

Truly a get-away in the wilderness with amenities of great hotel
I traveled with a friend and we both found this cabin well-equipped every cooking utensil and pan that we wanted. We received a welcome visit from Judy when we arrived. She made sure we knew where everything was and invited us to ask for anything else we needed. The smores were great and sitting by the dock and on the large deck were great spaces to relax. We highly recommend this place.

Wonderful stay right on a lake. Excellent host.
We had the most wonderful stay at Judy’s property. The pictures/description are very accurate and if you are looking for a wilderness break, this would be an perfect choice. The hut itself is very well set up for a comfortable stay. The kitchen is well equipped to cook at home. The lounge area is spacious with sofas and a smart TV for quiet evenings, watching a film or playing games. There is a great selection of board games. The grounds outside the cabin are beautiful with a seating terrace, jetty out to the water to watch the sunset, and a beach with fire pit. The biggest draw for us was the direct access to the lake, and the boating equipment available for use. There are two canoes, two kayaks, and two paddle boards. We went out nearly every single day to explore the surrounding lake area and were captivated by the wildlife and beautiful scenery. Restaurant options in the immediate area are okay and there was greater choice when we were in Grand Rapids. The local gas station has a decent range of food for a simple meal. We also bought a fishing license here and the staff advised us on the best places to fish. Judy was an excellent host. She provided so much information before our stay and was on hand for any questions. We tried a number of excursions suggested in the information book, including a walk to the Lost 40 woodland and a walk and swim at the Sunken Lake. We would thoroughly recommend this holiday property. Thank you for our perfect stay.

Great Property - Nice Family!
The cabin was super clean -- spotless! The kitchen is well supplied and we had everything we needed for making meals and grilling. Judy and her family were welcoming and made us feel very comfortable. We like to bike (bicycles) and loved the close proximity to Itasca State Park, Bemidji State Park, The Heartland Trail, The Paul Bunyan Trail and the Mesabi Trail -- We biked all of these -- Itasca and the Mesabi Trail from Grand Rapids to Calumet were our favorites. We also loved seeing the "Lost 40" and using the canoes and kayaks. Thanks for a lovely time and wonderful little cabin.

Enjoyable week
We enjoyed our week taking full advantage of the canoes, kayaks, and paddle boards. The cabin was as described and communications from the host were really helpful as we prepare for our trip. (I'm glad we had bug spray!)

Peaceful retreat
We had such a wonderful time as a family this week. The location was close enough for day trips to Grand Rapids and Itasca but isolated enough to retreat from everyday life. Thank you Judy for sharing this wonderful property!

Great cabin for a small family.
Cute little cabin for a small family. Everything except your food and beverage was provided. Bottle of wine was an added bonus! Lake was very low but still caught some walleye and northern which we caught and released. Judy was an excellent hostess and was very helpful and knowledgeable about the area and surrounding lakes. Definately a 5 star host!!

Cozy cabin
We stayed at the Kingfisher cabin. The pictures on VRBO accurately reflect the cozy cabin. Kingfisher is setback from the lake. The other cabin rental is in front of Kingfisher closer to the lake. Kingfisher’s view of the lake is mostly of the other rental cabin in front of it, like in the VRBO pictures. The exterior of the property is well maintained. The amenities such as bonfire, dock, lake view patio, canoes, etc. are shared, as described in the listing, with the other cabin rental and property owner. For our trip this was fine. The other family had a similar age child. If you are expecting seclusion then you will want to rent both cabins - you will be enjoying your vacation with the renters next door. The interior of Kingfisher was clean and nicely appointed. The triple bunks were a hit with my elementary age children. The kitchen is stocked with essential cooking supplies. The living and dining room are arranged for casual cabin living. The main bedroom has ample storage and a comfortable bed. Round Lake was very low when we visited. The lower lake level exposed more sandy bottom. The paddle boards, kayaks, and canoes are conveniently located for use. You will need to bring your own PDFs. Overall it was a nice week spent in the woods and on the lake.
