The village itself is a historic gem, preserving its ancient layout of cobblestone streets and glimpses of a bygone era; it is even mentioned in *The Divine Comedy* by “the great poet” Dante Alighieri, who stopped in Bertinoro while staying with the lord of Ravenna, Guido da Polenta. Bertinoro has symbolized true Italian hospitality since ancient times, with the Column of Hospitality in the main square still serving as its centerpiece; it hosts the important Hospitality Festival every September, during which the homes of Bertinoro’s residents open their doors to guests to offer them the traditional Romagna feast-day lunch. Boasting a rich Italian culinary tradition, the town offers exquisite dishes in several small restaurants tucked away in the heart of the town center, nestled among the Tower, the Cathedral, and the thousand-year-old Fortress—beautifully restored and now home to the University Residential Center.
