This place is on the lower end of the scale. I complained about black mould in the Air-conditioning and they kicked me out, I then complained online and they banned me from the hotel and didn't bother letting me know so they are terrible customer service agents as well as poor hotel managers. They also offered a refund for the black mould incident and never gave me one so they are also bad people with low morals.

There was no balcony as the pictures suggested when booking, was not happy. Windows were obscured. Air con was fine. No spoons, just icy pole sticks to my cup of coffee. One very thin blanket to add to bed.

Our initial room was facing Grafton Street and had louvred glass windows which meant there were large air gaps around the windows and nothing to stop all the noise from surrounding bars and the street, which went late into the night (we had to buy earplugs from the Woolworths across the road). Staff kindly moved us to another room which was very quiet. It was fantastic having parking included in their secure car park but there weren’t many spaces available in their car park so most people need to park on the street where it was difficult to find a park. The area wasn’t great (seemed to be lots of bars, strip clubs, tattoo parlours around) but we were in easy walking distance from the fabulous esplanade and harbour dining areas (Yayas Greek, Marinades Indian, Divine Gelato). One pillow was pretty light on lumpy foam filling but a cushion made up for it, the king bed was two singles together but ok. Overall it was an economical, clean and in the end quiet base for day trips to the surrounding bush and wetlands.

The hotel is in a great location—the beachfront promenade is within walking distance, as is everything else you might need. For an additional fee, you can rent a parking space in the garage, but there are also parking spots available right outside. The hotel itself could use a bit of a makeover, but it was clean and the air conditioning worked well.

Often stay at Hides because it is so central. I’ve been staying there for at least 30 years. It’s a bit jaded but ok. I do object to paying about $170 a night and only have the room serviced once in 4 days. No butter at breakfast the last day. But I am fond of the old thing and will continue to patronise her!
