Very relaxing
Lovely property, set in peaceful and lush environment. The views from the property and the sunsets are fantastic. The only âdownsideâ is that there are no restaurants within reasonable walking distance but if you want the peaceful location then this is to be expected.Overall great place

My husband and I stayed at this lovely villa to celebrate our anniversary. The villa is a gem of a home. The views out over the sea are splendid. We spent a lot of time outdoors on the terrace and cooking in the brilliant outdoor kitchen (which we loved). We also swam in the pool every day and the loungers are a great place to relax. The gardens are wonderful with mature trees and shrubs. The setting is very peaceful and we loved coming back to the serenity of the villa. We spent more time there than we thought that we would just because it is so nice. The villa itself is spacious, clean and well equipped with great views from every room. The beds are very comfortable and the en-suite showers are powerful and hot. Emanuel is a very kind and helpful host. We arrived very late in the night and Emanuel had left us some lovely gifts for our anniversary. We met him later in the week and he is very friendly and a lovely man. Communication was great. He couldn't have done more to make us feel welcome.Would definitely recommend this villa and we would love to stay again on another visit to Madeira.

Wow!
This is the place to stay if you like fantastic views across the sea with the most superb sunsets.! The villa is situated in the most wonderful spot , very quiet and not overlooked and stands in immense gardens. The swimming pool is great for a cool off.
The villa has everything you need and communication with Emanuel is excellent.
A car is a necessity though to reach the supermarkets and restaurants.
I would thoroughly recommend if you are looking for somewhere away from the madding crowds and love being outside.
We will be returning for sure.

Our week in Madeira
We really enjoyed Emanuel's place. It came just as advertised. We were looking for a more remote of a location away from any hustle and bustle. It was closer to many great levada walks and that was a major plus!!

Faja Da Ovelha Review
The property is approximately 350 metres above the Atlantic Ocean and bathed in sunshine from dawn to dusk. A delightful mix of old-world house character, with mature gardens and a modern pool complex, awaits your visit. A quiet neighbourhood but close enough to the main highway to reach Calheta in 20 minutes. Emmanuel personally welcomed us with the keys and I can't wait to revisit 2022 when the flowers are at their best. Madeira what an island... Richard & Heather Harvey

Best sea view in Madeira
This property is set in a wonderful sunny location on the south west side of the island away from the crowds in Funchal but close enough to reach the capital in 40 mins by the fast express road.
The house is fabulous and well furnished with two bedrooms and three bathrooms. The garden is a joy to sit in and there is a lovely swimming pool and a large sun terrace to enjoy the view and sun.
Each of the upstairs bedrooms has a balcony to get another great view from. At night its lovely just sitting on the upper terrace watching the stars.
We would highly recommend this property and Emanuel the owner is first class at communicating and is very helpful.

Peaceful, spacious villa with stunning views of the ocean.
We had a wonderful fortnight in this lovely villa. The owner Emmanuel was helpful and welcoming and the housekeeper Maria is friendly and does a super job. We were glad we hired a diesel car (a Peugeot 308) as the driving in Madeira is a challenge on the hilly roads. The villa is spacious with two generous bedrooms and 3 bathrooms. The pool is lovely, kept spotless by the owner and has ocean views. We had such a lovely relaxing break here the location is so peaceful and relaxing a real get a way from it all location. There are some beautiful levada walks in easy reach and some stunning scenery. In nearby Calheta we found a great supermarket and we booked a fantastic trip to watch whales and dolphins. Funchal is easily accessible by car and we loved the cable car to Monte. Thank you Emmanuel we loved your beautiful villa

Comfortable and well-equipped
We arrived late at night at the villa and were met by the delightful housemaid Maria. She showed us round the property and then departed. The house is spacious and well-equipped. The pool - whilst not large - was adequate and well-maintained by the owner (Emanuel). Emanuel had provided us with basic groceries to start us off since we had arrived so late - these were most welcome. He also met us a couple of times when he came to clean the pool.
What could not be helped was that the weather was not as warm as we expected and we had a little more rain than we would have liked. However, that is not something over which Emanuel had any control.
Anybody staying here does really need to hire a car. It is a 1-hour journey from the airport, and the major sights are all located towards Funchal. The road from the airport is mostly an expressway - the last few kilometres are on the old main road which is very twisty and in parts very steep (both up and down). For anyone who likes road tunnels, Madeira is the place to go!
We really did enjoy our stay at Faja da Ovelha. Thank you Emanuel and Maria.

Well equipped, clean, away from it all villa.
We had a nice relaxing stay at Faja da Ovelha, despite not having very good weather. We seemed to pick a bad week, and spent more time in the house than around the pool. There was a lot of very low cloud all week which meant most of the time we couldnât see the sea which wasnât far below us. We had a big storm on the first day we were there which meant some rain got under the front door and we had rather a puddle, but it was extremely heavy rain. It was cool enough a couple of evenings to light the log fire which was lovely.
We travelled round most of the island sometimes to get away from the fog or low cloud. The road through a lot of tunnels is fairly quick into Funchal , but it is much more interesting to take some of the coastal roads which are very bendy and steep, and in our week there had quite a few land slip.
The house is on its own in a small village and about 15 mins from the main town Calheta, where most restaurants and the main supermarket are. The drive up to the house is very steep so you might need a good car to get up.
It was very comfortable, and very well equipped with everything you could possibly want in the kitchen. We were greeted by Emanuel when we arrived late on the Friday evening and he had provided everything we needed for breakfast and more the next morning, which was very kind. The house was very clean and Maria the cleaner called by a couple of times to see if we needed anything. I would recommend to anyone who likes to get away from it all, but you couldnât stay here without a car.

Beautiful location, very quiet, relaxing, lovely cottage but !!
Firstly the directions Id printed off( just in case no phone signal) were awful. We had to stop at Precipio restaurant which we knew from previous reviews wasn't too far away, they never heard of the road or house (found them to be a bit rude). So we continued our search till we came across it !!We found that if you go into the village and just follow the signs for the miradour (view) you will find the gates to the house. We were met by Maria who showed us all we needed to know. The house was clean and had everything you need. she said there were new mattresses on each of the 3 beds so we hoped to be comfy. It isn't until you live in the house that you begin to find fault with it.The mattresses were so hard the pillows terrible and the seating downstairs was very uncomfortable. The whole place inside needs a coat of white emulsion as there are stains on the walls from damp and squashed mozzies ! There are 3 showers only one has decent showerhead a very cheap replacement from a supermarket would do.
Such a shame the sun beds were so scruffy the mattresses were disgusting left out in the rain to hold water which has gone mouldy and smelly!.We didn't use the pool as it was cold.
We've given a four star as its a lovely area and house which with a bit of tlc could be 5.
We also suggest you stop off in Calheta on the way to pick up supplies as there isn't anything here and i'm afraid the Precipio didn't get a visit from us so cant comment and as reviewers mention you need to be steady on your feet the steep drive and steps up to the house are a challenge.
p.s a little bakery van called everyday near the gate around 4pm lovely fresh bread.

Fabulous villa ... Fabulous Host!
The villa itself is incredibly spacious and don't let the fact that there are only two bedrooms put you off (one bedroom has two double beds and a cot!). The three showers rooms are well equipped with sink, shower & toilet in each. The lounge furnishings are great and the log fire amazing. The kitchen was very well equipped (in fact so well equipped little space for food). The pool was lovely but a bit cold...but hey we were in November so expected. The bbq hut was great and the fruit trees lovely. However I would respectfully suggest that the villa is not suitable for people with walking difficulties due to the number of steps ....
However this seems to be the norm for Madeira. Finally what can I say about Mr.Janes???? Absolutely perfect host (best we have ever encountered) he met us on arrival, put us totally at ease as he showed us around and was particularly informative. We did encounter a tiny problem at the villa but we called him and he had it fixed promptly. The lovely Maria (the cleaner) is also fabulous and does a pretty impressive job. Villa was spotless. Would highly recommend!

A comfortable, well equipped villa with the most amazing views!
Had a wonderful holiday in Madeira and the villa was great. It is well equipped with everything you need to spend time relaxing and enjoying your time without travelling too far. You do need a car just to go to the supermarket but there is so much to do and see in Madeira that a car is the best option here anyway.
A wonderful place to stay, with spectacular views!

Thebaida do Massapez a beautiful villa with amazing views
My partner & I stayed for a week in early September. Emanuel met us when we arrived late on the Friday evening and nothing was too much trouble to help us settle in. The villa was clean comfortable and beautifully situated with amazing views over the West Coast - and truly stunning sunsets.
I agree with previous comments - rent a medium sized car as the drive is steep and requires a strong clutch! To be honest you probably need a similar sized car to cope with the local hairpin bends anyway. If you're a nervous driver - then ask someone else to drive.
We drove around most of Western Madeira and had a couple of forays to the North coast where the climate was MUCH cooler. The whole island is full of amazing sub tropical plants - which I guess explains the " floating garden" description. I was fascinated by the geography & geology of the island - but most people I am sure would just be happy with the climate & views!
Make sure you visit the Bar Precipio which is the nearest watering hole. There is no menu - just fresh fish of the day with salad, but it had a view over Paul do Mar to die for and to be honest it was the best fish we ate in the holiday.
I cannot recommend the villa or region enough - it is truly beautiful. Daryl & Rob

comfortable, rustic villa
Enjoyed our stay in this rustic villa. Superb views, enjoyed swimming in the pool. Good location for walks - we walked along levadas and down the cliff path to the bay below. On the wet day, we enjoyed the warmth from the log fire. It has a steep drive, but once we got used to it, it wasn't a problem for us.

Spectacular Views on Paradise Island
What a wonderful little village Faja Da Ovelha is, set against the hillside with tremendous views extending as far as the horizon line, a little bar, a lovely church and friendly locals, some speak English but others just nod in a friendly way to acknowledge you.
The villa is brilliant as a base for the island. It is far enough away from the airport to feel nicely isolated from the big bad world, but close enough to the star attractions to make the driving, and there will be a lot of that, not too straining.
You are met promptly by Emmanuel, who will check your flight times and be ready for your arrival. He is a wonderful man, who you have to envy, but in the nicest way of course as he has a wonderful location and property and seems very relaxed and clearly a happy man. He will show you everything you need to know and you can ask him anything you need or wish to know locally etc etc. P.s. The Orange's in the garden are amazing!!!!!
The villa has all facilities needed to make your stay comfortable. If I'm picky, then the beds are pretty hard but after a days walking on the Levadas or strolling the Botanic gardens, you will care little about this. There is TV and DVD for a stormy night (we had a few in December) or plenty of chairs and recliners for book reading on sunny days.
IMPORTANT- and I cant stress this enough, get a decent sized car, as our first hire car, An Opel Adam (the, 'or similar' we were given instead of the preferred) would not get up the incredibly steep driveway even after I kicked the bags out and my other half, all 6ft4 of him! Four attempts and lots of burnt rubber, it wasn't going to happen. We got a Renault Clio, at more expense but this went up the driveway perfectly. I would suggest a Diesel, as does Emmanuel. Note to self, must listen to advice when given more often!
For good food and quiet drinks we would suggest the MAKTUB in Paul do Mar, its the next village/small town along the coast. Excellent Food and Drinks from the most unassuming little surf style bar. They sell more Havana Club than anywhere else in Portugal and the food is fantastic. Tiny little place, no bigger than a beach hut but oozing with character. Or, try Prazeres for another amazing meal but with the locals this time and a few lost looking tourists. Funchal is lovely, but find the old fishing port end, its full of character, old buildings, churches, ports and exquisite restaurants.
All I can say is... We will be back and for longer next time
