Needs a quality renovation

We were excited to see that this tired property was finally getting renovated. But we think our room was one of the ones that had already been “renovated”. It had definitely been repainted—very poorly—as if it had been done in the dark. There was paint slopped on the carpet, tile, etc. It was NOT an improvement over the way the rooms were before. Also, the towels are super thin and rough as sandpaper. Time to replace those! Breakfast continues to be lackluster. On the positive side, the beds are wonderfully comfortable and the rooms are usually quite clean.

The pool and hot tub were out of order for remodeling I think, so the kids were pretty disappointed. Our room was pretty clean, except it seems like they got flecks of drywall mud on the carpet near. A couple of the walls inside our room and on the shelves near the bathroom and never cleaned it off, so not sure how clean the room was overall.

It’s not really fair to rate a property while it’s undergoing renovations. This hotel is busy updating, and we wish them all the best with their big changes. We have stayed here several times before, and once again — despite the renovation — we found super friendly staff; a clean, comfortable room; and a very cool ambience. When this hotel is finished with its updates, it will be a dazzler. We’ll always stay here when passing through Cortez.

I booked this place because it said there was an indoor pool. I was severely disappointed to learn that the pool is currently closed for the season. Also, it looks like Holiday Inn Express bought this from another company. It just didn't feel like a Holiday Inn Express. I walked in wondering if I was even in the right place because it wasn't branded very well. And the breakfast lady was soooo grumpy.
