The Hotel El Virrey is just about the only hotel directly on and facing the historic Plaza de Armas. It’s ideal for exploring the center of old Cusco.
The staff were very friendly and as helpful as possible.
The breakfast included with a night’s stay is typical of most Peruvian hotels but doesn’t start until 6:30 am which doesn’t work travellers doing an early start to Machu Picchu.
We stayed in two different rooms during our stays there. If you’re booking try to get the suite room 205. It’s spacious with a balcony facing the Plaza. Perfect for watching the square without being pestered by the constant stream of independent ‘souvenir’ vendors hawking their wares. The other room, a double standard on the third floor was tiny with no room to move and a window facing an inner ventilation shaft.
Because it is an older boutique hotel there is no elevator. And there is often just a petit young woman on the front desk so be prepared to carry your own luggage possibly as much as two flights of stairs. An exhausting labour in the thin oxygen of the 11,000 ft. altitude.
But given the very reasonable price of the rooms and it’s excellent location, we highly recommend the El Virrey and would give it at least a 4 out of 5 stars.
