Turn-Again Cottage - Ye Olde Harbor Masters House.

A Day at the House

You wake to waves. Not loud, not close — just a steady murmur from the shore, far enough away to be a lullaby rather than an alarm.

The French press is already going. Mug in hand, you step onto the front deck and let the early sun find you. First sip. A slow exhale. "Aahh."

This is the sound of the morning here: quails muttering "chi-ca-go" in the grass and on the power pole, a tui working the pohutukawa, a wood pigeon thumping heavily overhead. Now and then someone wanders past on the road below — a nod, a wave, and you're right back to your own quiet, private conversation. Out here, people don't intrude. They just say hello.

By mid-morning the road has its own gentle rhythm. A quad bike rumbles by with a sheepdog riding the back tray, ears flapping. Kids laugh from wherever. Drivers lift a hand to each other as they pass — because that's just what you do out here, and it doesn't take long before you're doing it too - try it!. There aren't many people around, so the ones you do see, you wave to. It's neighbourly in a way that feels almost old-fashioned, and entirely welcome.

If you venture out on the sand in your quad or ute for an early morning fish - remember those streams across the sand bring in mud too - don't let it get bogged down on the beach — although someone often offers to help pull you out.

Back at the house, the bread goes in early and the whole place slowly fills with that smell — the one that pulls kids away from whatever they're doing. While it bakes, there's badminton on the lawn, a card game at the table, a board game half-finished, or just you and a book in a patch of sun. Then the bread comes out, butter melts into it, a slab of cheese on the side, and that's breakfast sorted - with or without the fresh fish!

After that, the day is yours. Togs on, down to the beach. Or re-saddle up the quad and head north along the sand — keep an eye out for the seals, especially if you're here in March. There's no schedule to keep. That's rather the point.

Badminton on the lawn and laughter, fun, family memories and breathe.

As the light goes gold, it's a bath, a glass of wine, BBQ cooking and the particular kind of quiet that only comes after a full day outdoors. The kids are tired in the best way. The stories from today are already becoming the ones you'll tell for years.

There's room for everyone here — portacot, bunks, and 3 queen beds all, such a great way for two families to make a holiday for the kids to remember. Sleeping under the same roof and wake up to the same waves.

This is the life! Come and have your share of a few days of it.

If the weather is brisk, you can have a meal and a drink at the local Herbertville Inn, sit by the fire, talk to the locals (or don't) - it was brought back to life by several local families after Cyclone Gabrielle flooded it. A place for family to gather and talk and the community to be united in an informal fashion.

If golfing is your jam - we got one of those too - fantastic views as a waterfront course - bring your clubs and throw in your wind proof jacked to be sure.

So much to behold, is your heart big enough to take it all in with this rugged beauty, and indoor/outdoor lifestyle.

Whilst there is not view of the sea - you can smell it and hear it. You can feel it in the air and walk to the beach - takes about 10 minutes. There is a pleasant background silence that just can't be experienced in the city - that's why it's so good to reset here.
