The Boat House has a vestibule that can be used for boots and coats and has the shower room adjacent. You then walk into the feature open-plan kitchen/dining/living room which has wooden floors and French doors onto an outside seating area overlooking the loch. The living space is roomy and comfortable, and is the perfect place to recharge after long days out exploring the islands. There’s a staircase that leads up from the living area to the galleried bedroom, which boasts a double as well as a small single bed. So if you have a wee one, this room is brilliant as a family room for three.
The Boat House is in such a secluded, private spot that it will be all yours. The patio is private and has a picnic table which is ideal for lunching or use in the evening to sit back and watch the spectacular sunsets over the loch, which is accessible from the gardens - ideal for spotting visiting wild fowl, hen harriers and even otters!
Lochmaddy is a harbour village and was once a major herring port and well known in the 17th century as a hideout for pirates! Now the village is a main hub for the ferries from Harris, and Uig on the Isle of Skye. It’s a fabulous sail across The Minch separating the Inner and Outer Hebrides where you may be lucky enough to see dolphins and even orca whales. However, if you want to arrive by air, there is an airport on the island of Benbecula, which is connected to North Uist by a causeway. Lochmaddy has a shop, a café, a great pub and restaurants in the village hotels. All you need is within walking distance from The Boat House, that is when you’re not out and about exploring the hills, lochs, white beaches, many walking trails and the beautiful wild flowers of the machairs.
North Uist, your ‘home island’ whilst staying at The Boat House, is a fascinating place, displaying what is known as a ’drowned landscape’ covered by peat and lochans. It’s a unique and magical setting and has lovely white beaches on the west coast which are less well known than those on Harris, but equally beautiful. As with Lewis and the other Outer Hebridean islands, there are several prehistoric sites across North Uist, including the huge chambered burial cairn of Barpa Langais.
The walking and cycling is outstanding in the Western Isles and many ancient routes have been joined together to form the Hebridean Way which traverses the length of the islands. It is very well signposted and well worth following to get a taste of what the islands have to offer. The bus network works well with the trail so you can walk one way and easily get a lift back. Wherever you go on North Uist you will stand a great chance at spotting wildlife with many species not found easily elsewhere, having adapted to the unusual landscapes. You may see otters and many types of rare bird species, including the corncrake. There’s also the largest colony of grey seals in Europe just off North Uist, and, as you may see when crossing The Minch, there are marine mammals such as dolphins, basking sharks and whales cruising just off the coast, as well as white tailed sea eagles.
With its mix of salt water and freshwater lochs, North Uist is an angler’s paradise. Don’t hesitate, stay at The Boat House and have the perfect base to explore this fascinating part of the world. Beaches 7 miles. Shop 50 yards, pub and restaurants 300 yards.
