Outdoor and inn Mandir / Renovated house in an old building that was originally a temple
Starting with local attractions such as Mount Shari, Kamino-ike Pond, and Sakura Falls, the area is situated between scenic spots like Shiretoko National Park, Akan-Mashū National Park, and Abashiri Quasi-National Park, as well as the JR Senmo Line, Memanbetsu Airport, and Nakashibetsu Airport. “Satsuru-machi”—a town unknown to the rest of the country—offers a wide variety of activities, including hiking, cycling, and running. In July 2021 (Reiwa 3), we partially renovated a building that was originally a temple to serve as a base for outdoor enthusiasts, opening a small guesthouse and an outdoor shop specialising in trail running gear.
This building was originally known as “Jōunzan Gan’nyū-ji,” a temple of the Jōdo Shinshū Otani sect. It was established in 1924 (Taishō 13) as the “Kamui Sekkō-jō” (Kamui Sermon Hall) in a location quite close to the current Mugikawa facility (the massive facility at Town No. 1). Later, as it became difficult to maintain, it was relocated in 1934 (Shōwa 9) to its current location at 14 Futsugen-chō. It was built as the “Satsugen Sermon Hall.” Apparently, even during the “Kamui Sermon Hall” era, it served as a terakoya (traditional children’s school) and functioned as a place for children’s education.
In 1955 (Shōwa 30), it received official approval for the temple name “Jōunzan Gan’nyū-ji” and was registered as a religious corporation. According to the Kiyosato Town History, there were 160 households of parishioners. The temple was then rebuilt in 1980 (Showa 55), and it remains in its current form today. At a time when the average monthly salary was 130,000 yen, the project required tens of millions of yen, reportedly sparking heated debate among the parishioners, with some voicing strong opposition. However, because the project would bring a new landmark to the area, donations were received not only from parishioners but also from other town residents, and funds were secured from financial institutions. Construction was completed successfully, and the loan was reportedly repaid in just over two years. Everyone who supported us—you’re amazing. In 2021, we had planned to demolish this building, which had already been abandoned as a temple. However, as the shop owner— Takashi Shimada—who was planning a business here, a location with great potential to become a hub for tourism and activities in Eastern Hokkaido—proposed repurposing the building. After receiving the full approval of the parishioners and the managing organisation, Sennin-ji Temple in Shari Town, we began renovations. Thanks to the cooperation of the contractors we hired for the work and a successful crowdfunding campaign—which garnered support from as many as 99 patrons—we’ve finally managed to open our doors.
Although the repairs were done by hand, we hope you’ll enjoy this property, which retains its Showa-era atmosphere.
We offer room-only accommodation. While there is a shared space for self-catering, please note that convenience stores and other shopping options are a short distance away, which may cause some inconvenience. We hope you’ll find the charm in deliberately embracing the simplicity of this unspoiled setting.
