Levin is home to the Great Forest Marathon, held in the Waitarere Forest every April. Even if you can't make it for the marathon, a walk through the forest is well worth it. Another must-see is the Hydrabad shipwreck at Waitarere Beach. While you're at the beach, you can also go fishing, surfing and/or sailing. It's safe for children to go swimming too (accompanied by an adult, of course). Another good swimming spot is Lake Horowhenua, which is the town's main rowing and sailing venue. However, it's not the only lake in the area, as Lake Papaitonga just a 15 minute drive away, also known as Waiwiri is a beautiful nature reserve and home to some unique birds and wildlife. It's also historically significant to the Maori people because the ancient chief, Te Rauparaha, claimed this area from the Muaupoko tribe, which had previously killed his son and daughter.

Love a bargain? Head to the factory outlet shops in Levin where you’ll find great quality clothing at bargain prices. There are also a few antique stores and second hand shops in town. After all of that shopping, unwind with a glass of wine, particularly Pinot, in nearby Martinborough, which is 110km away. Here, you can go on a wine tour and sample a drop (or two) in one of the many boutique wineries as well as some fabulous food in one of the many gourmet restaurants.

Levin is roughly halfway between Wellington and Palmerston North, so you've got a couple of travel options. You can take advantage of these cheap flights to Wellington and, perhaps, stay a night or two in one of these hotels in the capital, which is 98km from Levin. Or, you can fly to Palmerston North, which is 55km away. If you do decide on the latter option, and you arrive in the wee hours of the morning, you might like to stay in one our Palmerston North hotels.
