Avoid This Resort – Disrespect, Stereotyping, and Blame-Shifting
Our family of 20+ booked Sonesta Maho Beach Resort for my sister’s 40th birthday. We brought elderly parents, kids, and couples, expecting a fun celebration. Instead, we got public disrespect from staff, offensive comments from a manager, broken A/C for days, and a follow-up response that blamed us.
The biggest incident happened when a staff member near the pool bathrooms insulted my brother-in-law, telling him “he’s not his slave to clean after him” — in front of his wife and 9-year-old. When we calmly brought this to Angela Monroy (a manager), she told us they “could kick us all out,” accused me of drinking (I hadn’t), and said to my brother-in-law “us Latinos are hot-blooded.” To my white partner, her tone was completely different, but she still made a bizarre remark about “drunks and drugs.”
Instead of apologizing and taking responsibility, management later sent us a message doubling down — claiming my brother-in-law was aggressive and threatening, based on their own staff’s accounts and footage we were never allowed to see. We were never contacted directly by upper management, even after requesting it.
Other problems:
A/C didn’t work for three nights in multiple rooms.
Food was consistently below average.
Many staff acted irritated or unapproachable.
