A sunbathing area by day and a perfect night sky for stargazing. On the Gargano promontory, between the Gargano National Park and the Adriatic Sea, the project “Where Art Reconstructs Time” has been underway since 2016 at the Siponto Archaeological Park, an innovative metal-mesh installation by the young Lombard artist Edoardo Tresoldi, whose forms evoke the final phase of the ancient early Christian basilica. You’ll find yourself between two UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Puglia: Castel del Monte and Monte Sant’Angelo. Here, as well as in Manfredonia, there are important Swabian castles. We’re also close to the Umbra Forest and numerous sanctuaries (San Giovanni Rotondo, San Matteo, San Michele). Mattinata is one of the most beautiful stretches of coastline in the Gargano and in all of Puglia; it consists of pebbles shaped and smoothed by the sea, which winds its way along the coast through caves and coves until it reaches picturesque beaches accessible only by sea. It is dominated to the south by Mount Saraceno, offering a panoramic view of the entire bay. Along this stretch of coastline lies Baia delle Zagare—a name derived from the blossoms of the orange groves typical of this area—or Baia dei Mergoli, named for the presence of blackbirds and sparrows; this is one of the most famous beach resorts. The bay is surrounded by towering cliffs; just a few metres from the shore rise the two sea stacks, Arco di Diomede and Le Forbici, which make the view even more spectacular. Continuing from Mattinata towards Vieste, you’ll come to Vignanotica, known for its tall, white cliff face dotted with caves and rocks; the seabed is gravelly and drops steeply into the sea. Mattinatella is another stretch of coastline consisting of two beaches, dominated by a rock formation about 100 metres high; the northern section is accessible only from the sea and is perfect for spearfishing enthusiasts. The Salina di Margherita di Savoia Nature Reserve is a protected natural area established in 1977 and is also a World Heritage Site in Puglia. You can admire the largest salt flats in Europe, soak up some iodine, and at the same time observe pink flamingos and hundreds of other bird species.
