Rooms all smelled. First one that we were in was unbearable, moldy. Therme was very nice. Something was leaking in the bathroom and flooding the floor. You seemingly had control of the thermostat, but I had it set at 15c, and the room was at 21c all night, which in a room that you can’t open windows felt pretty claustrophobic. Bed wasn’t very comfortable and the pillows were horrendous. Staff was nice enough. Breakfast was mediocre by Italian hotel standards.

The stay at hotel itself was very nice. The only issue is the access to the hotel. It should have been made clear in the reservation (not find print at end) that you could not access the site if you did not have a special resident permission. As a result we got a big fine which really frustrated us and made our stay unpleasant.

Only downside is the staff coordinating travel arrangements huge confusion and misunderstanding. Which results in the hotel staff getting annoyed because we booked our own private car service.

Gorgeous cave rooms, built vertically from bottom of the stassi to the top level. Eve to ator is available, but you'll still have steps & possibly a bit of a walk to your room. No one to help with luggage when we checked in & out. Reception could have been more helpful in orienting us upon arrival vis a vis parking & the shuttle service the hotel provides. If you drive, ask about parking & the shuttle in advance. Hotel should be more helpful with individual travellers.

My stay at Locando di San Martino was great. The place was perfectly located in the middle of Matera with beautiful views through the window and outdoor sitting areas. They offer a free shuttle to and from the parking structure if you have a car, as you cannot park or drive near the hotel because of ZTL areas. This was so convenient and organized. You make a reservation with the parking structure online, and they answer you pretty quickly. Once you arrive, you just call the hotel and they'll pick you up within 10 mins as it's pretty close. Would absolutely stay here again!

Great location. Large unique, comfortable room. Nice shower. One great benefit was pick up & return to parking structure - a major problem at many historic areas of Italian cities. Only criticism is that breakfast quality was uneven. One day pastries were dry next fine. Coffee was far below general quality of the house and below quality of coffee at other comparable hotels.

Everything was lovely. The rooms are very dark so brighter lighting especially around the sink area would be helpful. The air conditioning never reached the temperature selected therefore the room was warmer than we would've liked. the staff are very helpful and friendly. The location is great, away from the busier side of the old city but easy to access if you wanted to.
