The room was good except for one thing, the toilet seat. It was a crummy one plus it needed to be tightened down so that it would not move. This is the kind of stuff the house keeping staff should be vigilant about. Also, the hotel can be noisy just due to its design. Sound travels very well.

The hotel itself is very beautiful; Unfortunately we were very displeased with the service that was provided by the staff. Once we arrived, the clerk was unfriendly. He charged us extra because we booked online under one guest (our mistake, but he was very blunt and not kind or flexible about it). They also made us wait 45 minutes past the original check-in time, and had incredibly dirty bathrooms (soiled, unclean toilets and no toilet paper in their public stalls.) Overall what made the experience so negative was how the staff interacted with us.

This hotel is in need of a little TLC, but it's okay, generally speaking. Housekeeping services seemed to be somewhat lacking - e.g. the floor was not clean or swept properly. The bathroom was incredibly small with hardly enough room for one person to move freely. The bed was comfortable and the bedding and pillows okay. They have a great rooftop garden and restaurant, serving good local food (including a preset menu at a reasonable price). The rooftop has a good view of the street. The people/staff were friendly, but we didn't interact with them much save for the server at the rooftop restaurant, who was quite pleasant. Hotel Principal is an old, budget hotel ... charging relatively high prices for budget accommodation and services.
