Vintage is character. This hotel doesn’t have character. It feels neglected, it smells unbathed, and it doesn’t creak in the right ways. When we arrived, the night clerk wasn’t like what we had experienced throughout out road trip in Vermont, which included Stowe, Woodstock, and Burlington. He wasn’t eager to help, didn’t provide directions to the elevator, and couldn’t wait for us to walk away from the desk to get back to whatever he was doing. The elevator required a staff member to operate it, which is cool, if the bell in each floor worked. When the one on the second floor didn’t apparently work, we took our suitcases and ourselves down the stairs. Upon arriving at the bottom of the stairs, the morning clerk asked about the elevator. We indicated we rang it twice. She replied they didn’t get either ring, that we need to push it harder. In my head I thought, I wondered if she wanted me to go back up and ring the bell again? Just in helpful, unthankful, and quick to get on to the next thing. Anyway, the phones in the room did not work. The bath had exposed old plumbing that had been disconnected. The small fridge was placed next to the bed in front of the only usable plug. The lamps nor bedside tables had usb plugs or . I know this sounds petty for a “historic” hotel; however hotels operate with a repair and refurbishment budget for these purposes. This hotel lacks the character of being a historic hotel or a great stop on a classic Vermont road trip.

Booked the Middlebury Inn expecting to enjoy the beautiful historic inn pictured. Unfortunately our room was in the “motel annex” or just “annex”. This is a row of buildings behind the inn surrounding a parking lot. The motel rooms are glum. Thin doors and walls, dark, small windows, dated carpet and decor, and a small bathroom with a shower curtain that sticks to you when you try to shower, so you have to push it away and out of the tub, causing the floor to get wet. Be careful what room type you are booking. The chain hotel in town would have been much preferable to the “annex”. Really disappointing.

We loved the historic aspect of the Inn and how quaint the town is around the Inn. We had everything we needed including a refrigerator in the room and a flat screen tv. The king size bed was comfortable and the bathroom was spacious too. We would definitely book again if we come back to the area.

The staff were very friendly and the inn is in a wonderful location. However, the first room which was supposed to be a “luxury king” room was essentially a king bed in a closet with a small seating area. The couch was very stained and the bathroom was very outdated and ugly. The cabinet under the sink was askew. The shower curtain looked old. To the manager’s credit we were given an upgrade to a suite in another building when I complained. This was spacious with a nicer bathroom but was still a little run down. The inn really needs updating or at least the rooms we saw do. It was not inexpensive either. We have stayed at a much nicer inn close by. I would not want to stay here again unless absolutely necessary.

After four days of staying in chain motels, this was a wonderful upgrade for equal or even less expense. This historic property is full of character and charm, but has been beautifully maintained and improved. Staff are lovely and gracious. We will be sure to come back!

We booked it based on the marketing photos with anticipation we’d be in the bread and breakfast. The old hotel and that breakfast would be included. Upon checking in, we were shown our room in a motel in between the two older buildings. And breakfast was not included. The front service was unclear and terse if not just a little bit rude. I’d be leery of staying there, even though the town was fantastic. It was not the value reflected in the price.
