Steps from the Beach
Small, one bedroom apartment. Parts of this old neighborhood are still being updated/renovated, which is part of the charm. We parked in a parking garage a few blocks away. Google Maps took us through a winding maze of narrow streets and alleys directly to the unit. A little confusing at check-in, but host answered my call and walked me through how to get in. She only speaks a little English (I speak no Portuguese) but we were able to figure it out. Nothing fancy, but a very reasonable price and right across the street from the beach. The place across from the front door is in ruins, but like I said, it's part of the charm. My wife prefers nice hotels, so she was less enamored than I was. I loved the authentic feel of this neighborhood, which is a mix of locals and tourists. A posse of 4 stray cats greeted us as we checked in. Easy walk to numerous restaurants. Easy drive up the hill to where you can walk down to the old fort. If you're a fan of HBO's "100 Foot Wave," it's so cool to stand on top of the fort and look out to where they surf the monster waves. Even in April, the waves were big and awe inspiring. So glad we fit a day in Nazare into our roadtrip through Portugal.
